SUMMARY:Pink Martini featuring China Forbes at the Living Arts Centre
DESCRIPTION:In 1994 in his hometown of Portland\, Oregon\, Thomas Lauderdale was working in local politics when he saw the need for most engaging and inspiring music at political fundraisers. \nDrawing inspiration from music from all over the world–crossing genres of classical\, jazz and old-fashioned pop–and hoping to appeal to conservatives and liberals alike\, he founded the “little orchestra” Pink Martini in 1994 to provide more beautiful and inclusive musical soundtracks for causes such as civil rights\, affordable housing\, the environment\, libraries\, public broadcasting\, education and parks. One year later\, Lauderdale called China Forbes\, a Harvard classmate who was living in New York City\, and asked her to join Pink Martini. Their first song writing collaboration was “Sympathique (Je ne veux pas travailler)”which became an overnight sensation in France\, was nominated for “Song of the Year” at France’s Victoires de la Musique Awards\, and is still the band’s number one song. \nIn 2024 the band is celebrating it’s 30th anniversary!

SUMMARY:Jeremy Ledbetter Trio @ Oakville Centre for the Arts
DESCRIPTION:Forged in a cauldron of raging\, inspiring contemporary jazz\, the Jeremy Ledbetter Trio features three Canadian virtuosos — pianist and band-leader Jeremy Ledbetter (CaneFire)\, drummer Larnell Lewis (Snarky Puppy)\, and bassist Rich Brown (richthealgorithm) — at the absolute top of their game. Ledbetter’s compositions for the trio format push the boundaries of jazz and world music\, and provide an undiluted display of the astonishing musicianship of the Trio’s members. \nThe Jeremy Ledbetter Trio’s debut album\, Got a Light?\, is a controlled explosion of big musical ideas\, stylistic variety\, vivid colours\, and compelling musical storytelling. Forged in an interstellar collision of contemporary jazz and world music\, Ledbetter’s compositions form a style that is truly organic and uniquely his own.

SUMMARY:Canadian Brass @ Centre in the Square
DESCRIPTION:“These are the men who put brass music on the map with their unbeatable blend of virtuosity\, spontaneity and humor.” – Washington Post \nThe original challenge was to develop an audience for an ensemble of brass players that\, at the time\, had no standing in the concert world. What set Canadian Brass apart from all other performing artists in 1970 was the relentless search for repertoire that was both loved by its performers and embraced by a growing brass audience. \nThe musical experiences of the members along with the interests and wishes of audiences informed the programs that the group created ranging from Bach\, Handel\, Vivaldi\, Joplin\, Gershwin and Ellington\, to ballet\, opera and Schickele. The ensemble never ignored an opportunity to relate to its audience which brought the Brass to international attention. They were at first criticized for talking to audiences and now take pride in seeing the entire concert world embracing engagement as a fundamental element of performance. \nThe Brass has averaged two and a half full-length recordings per year of its 52 years of existence for a total of 138 recordings. They have received a combined total of 24 Grammy and Juno nominations and won the German Echo Award for Goldberg Variations. A North American group taking Bach back to Europe and winning approval at the highest level was a crowning achievement! Most recently during the Covid era\, the Brass created another award-winning recording\, Canadiana. The album features unique arrangements of many Canadian superstars include Joni Mitchell\, k.d. lang\, Bruce Cockburn\, Drake and DeadMau5. \nEducation continues to be at the forefront of Canadian Brass’ yearly activities. There are over one million Canadian Brass quintet repertoire books in the hands of students in every country with a strong brass tradition. Between Hal Leonard Music Publishing distributing its 800 unique individual brass titles and SmartMusic now making available some 76 titles for mixed ensemble use\, the Brass continues to shape the future of chamber music ventures.

SUMMARY:Come From Away
DESCRIPTION:The global sensation Come From Away returns to the historic Royal Alexandra Theatre — where it all began with the pre-Broadway engagement and the record-breaking Canadian production that played for nearly three sold-out years (before the pandemic pre-emptively cut its run short). \nThis New York Times Critic’s Pick takes you into the heart of the remarkable true story of 7\,000 stranded passengers and the small town in Newfoundland that welcomed them. Cultures clashed and nerves ran high\, but uneasiness turned into trust\, music soared into the night\, and gratitude grew into enduring friendships. \nDon’t miss this breathtaking musical written by Tony®-nominated Canadians Irene Sankoff and David Hein\, and featuring Tony®-winning direction by Christopher Ashley. Newsweek cheers\, “It takes you to a place you never want to leave!” \nOn 9/11\, the world stopped. \nOn 9/12\, their stories moved us all.

SUMMARY:The Hymns to Freedom Project with Jackie Richardson and The Rose Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:In the wake of ongoing struggles against racial injustice\, THE HYMNS TO FREEDOM PROJECT conveys hope and unity. Composer Corey Butler orchestrates a powerful docu-concert\, joined by The Rose Orchestra and celebrated artist Jackie Richardson. Interweaving Classical Music and Negro Spirituals\, the compositions echo the resilience of the human spirit. \nThrough music\, the project confronts the shadows of history\, juxtaposing tension and resolution against contemporary racial environments. Amidst discord\, the project serves as a timely reminder of enduring values—love\, respect\, and unity—and boldly asserts that love and unity triumph over hatred and division. Audiences will be both enchanted by the harmonies and challenged by the profound idea that we are better together.
