It’s an exciting time for live music and we couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome you back! \nThe 2022 season features multiple commissions by Harbourfront Centre. \n\nRaging for Change: Raging Asian Womxn Taiko Drummers\nRaging Asian Womxn Taiko Drummers (RAW) is a Toronto-based performing arts ensemble of East and Southeast Asian womxn. Formed in 1998\, they carry on the diasporic Taiko tradition that grew out of Asian-American and Asian-Canadian mobilization in the 60s and 70s. One of the few all-Asian\, all-womxn Taiko drumming groups in the world\, RAW exists as a critical response and challenge to both systemic and internalized oppressions. RAW plays large Taiko drums as creative resistance for social change\, carving space for self-expression\, education and community building.

SUMMARY:Beaches Jazz Festival 2022
DESCRIPTION:The Beaches International Jazz Festival is a month-long music festival held each year in the lakeside Beaches community of Toronto in July. It’s now one of Canada’s largest free jazz festivals with nearly 1\,000\,000 attendees\, throughout its month-long span. \nThe Festival takes place across a number of venues; stage concerts are held in several different parks within the area and also along a two kilometre stretch of the Beach mainstreet during StreetFest – Queen Street East. \nEvery year\, the Festival brings in internationally acclaimed jazz performers while also showcasing local talent\, including “new generation” jazz musicians. The Festival now hires around 1000 artists per annum\, including 50 bands for its “StreetFest” event along Queen Street East. \nThe Festival offers concerts at various locations: the Woodbine Park Main Stage\, Jimmie Simpson Park Main Stage and Big Band Stage. It’s an exciting time for live music and we couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome you back! \nThe 2022 season features multiple commissions by Harbourfront Centre. \n\nWaltzes\, Tangos and a Minuet: Bryan Cheng\n24-year-old cellist Bryan Cheng is fast-becoming internationally renowned\, having already won second prize and Audience Choice at the Geneva International Music Competition. His Toronto solo recital debut includes an energetic program that pays homage to the magical intersection of music\, dance\, and nature at the Toronto Music Garden. Through the voice of the prized ‘Bonjour’ Stradivarius cello from 1696 (on loan from the Canada Council for the Arts Musical Instrument Bank)\, Cheng will perform masterworks and rarely heard gems of the cello repertoire\, spanning four continents and three centuries. The program will culminate in Johann Sebastian Bach’s Cello Suite No. 1 in G Major\, the piece that inspired Yo-Yo Ma to create the Toronto Music Garden in 1999.

Now 26\, as a self-taught musician\, Debi continues to explore and experiment with the sounds of the legendary Django Reinhardt. Through gigging around the Toronto circuit\, playing festivals and concert halls in the U.S. and growing up in a very musical Botos family\, she has found a sound that is both modern and an homage to the greats. She studied music at Humber College and has collaborated with some of the contemporary giants of the genre\, including Samson Schmitt\, Ludovic Beier and Stephane Wrembel.

This concert\, their first live performance since the release of their acclaimed album Mirrored Glass in 2020\, will feature the bright\, playful melodies of Ann Southam’s music\, contrasted by the darker harmonies of Phillip Glass and the wind-up meditations of Aphex Twin. With a background in classical studies\, an interest in composition and an interactive and rhythmic ‘comping style\, Alexa has worked with a variety of musical acts such as TUSH\, the Queer Songbook Orchestra\, Andrew Downing and Shakura S’Aida\, and with theatre companies including the Obsidian Playwright Unit\, the Musical Stage Company\, Nightwood Theatre and more. In 2019\, she was awarded a TD Discovery Series grant for her R&B/jazz collective Moodset. She is currently teaching musical theatre performance at Sheridan College and piano at the Annex Academy of Music and more.
