SUMMARY:Alex Cuba and Raul Midon @ Koerner Hall
DESCRIPTION:A double bill of soul\, jazz\, and Latin pop sounds\, featuring two dazzling singer-songwriters and instrumentalists – the troubadour from Miami and the Cuban songsmith from Smithers\, BC. \nGrammy\, Latin Grammy\, and Juno Award-winning singer-songwriter Alex Cuba’s songs are compelling exchanges that effortlessly groove through soul\, funk\, jazz\, and pop styles. A forward-thinking\, indie-minded artist\, Cuba’s sugarcane-sweet melodies\, pop-soul hooks\, and powerful guitar riffs have garnered him over 20 awards and nominations\, including four Latin Grammys\, two Junos Awards\, three Grammy nominations\, and one Grammy win. “He’s like Marvin Gaye singing soul to a new generation.” (Boston Globe) \nRaul Midón is also a Grammy Award nominated contemporary singer/songwriter whose impassioned acoustic guitar playing – which traverses pop\, jazz\, soul\, urban\, cumbia\, and flamenco – has garnered as much attention as his smooth singing and sophisticated writing. He has worked with countless legends in the industry\, including Bill Withers\, Herbie Hancock\, Sting\, Terence Blanchard\, and Dianne Reeves\, to name a few. “Midón has a beautifully controlled baritone that can express anything from tenderness to passion. And the guy can play.” (The Guardian)

SUMMARY:Lizz Wright and Sanah Kadoura @ Koerner Hall
DESCRIPTION:Lauded vocalist Lizz Wright performs new music from her recently released album\, Shadow. Wright is a steward of American music\, bringing brilliant colour and vibrancy to singular original works and compositions by some of the greatest songwriters of our time. Through an inimitable voice that The New York Times touts as “a smooth\, dark alto possessed of qualities you might associate with barrel-aged bourbon or butter-soft leather\,” Wright sings with a soaring reflection of the cultural fabric of America. \nJuno Award nominated Lebanese-Canadian drummer\, composer\, educator\, and producer Sanah Kadoura’s music traverses the modern jazz idiom with hints of neo-soul and a strong musical influence from her motherland of Lebanon. “Kadoura is a dexterous improviser\, with a light\, elastic approach that evokes Tony Williams\, a major influence.” (JazzTimes)

His compositions and recordings are now permanent parts of the canon of great American music\, recognized by the Library of Congress\, with many inducted into The Grammy Hall of Fame; all are now required study for young musicians hoping to unlock the secrets of the jazz tradition. In today’s mainstream media\, Coltrane is often name- checked on television shows and referenced in major Hollywood films like Malcolm X\, Mo Better Blues\, Jerry McGuire\, Mr. Holland’s Opus\, and many others. \nIn 1995\, the United States Postal Service placed Coltrane on a commemorative postage stamp. In ’97\, he was bestowed the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. In ’01\, the National Endowment for the Arts chose “My Favorite Things” for its list of 360 songs of the century. In ’07\, Coltrane was awarded a Pulitzer Prize\, as a special citation for a lifetime of innovative and influential work. In 2018\, the release of Both Directions at Once : The Lost Album put Coltrane in the top of album charts in 20 countries around the world\, his strongest sales to date. \nNow\, with John Coltrane: Legacy\, the compositions of John Coltrane are given a new treatment that has never been heard. With the larger format of a symphony orchestra playing new arrangements specifically written for this setting\, audiences will hear Coltrane’s most enduring work expanded and reimagined by most lauded arrangers of the current era. Coltrane played his songs in new ways in every performance\, and that quest to discover new meaning in the pieces continues today.

SUMMARY:Toronto Jazz Fest: PRESERVATION HALL JAZZ BAND
DESCRIPTION:Preservation Hall Jazz Band has held the torch of New Orleans music aloft for more than 50 years\, all the while carrying it enthusiastically forward as a reminder that the history they were founded to preserve is a vibrantly living history. \nPHJB marches that tradition forward once again on So It Is\, the septet’s second release featuring all-new original music. The album redefines what New Orleans music means today by tapping into a sonic continuum that stretches back to the city’s Afro-Cuban roots\, through its common ancestry with the Afrobeat of Fela Kuti and the Fire Music of Pharoah Sanders and John Coltrane\, and forward to cutting-edge artists with whom the PHJB have shared festival stages from Coachella to Newport\, including legends like Stevie Wonder\, Elvis Costello and the Grateful Dead and modern giants like My Morning Jacket\, Arcade Fire and the Black Keys.
