SUMMARY:Discover Women in Jazz: Joanna Majoko
DESCRIPTION:Joanna Majoko performs LIVE from the Long & McQuade Performance Hall at the jazz.fm91 studios on August 22\, 2024\, as part of our Discover Women in Jazz concert series. \nBorn in Germany to German and Zimbabwean parents\, Majoko spent the majority of her childhood in Zimbabwe\, where she grew up speaking Shona and German and participating in choirs\, musicals\, drum ensembles\, and traditional Zimbabwean dance groups. From Zimbabwe\, Majoko moved briefly to South Africa; then\, at the age of fourteen\, she and her family moved to Manitoba. It was at the University of Manitoba that Majoko would become immersed in jazz and would hone her skills as a vocalist\, composer\, and bandleader. Later\, a move to Toronto would prove to be the catalyst for the next stage of her career. In Toronto’s rich\, multi-faceted musical community\, Majoko has found a steady stream of festivals\, radio stations\, and club programmers who were eager to hear her voice\, both as a guest vocalist and with her own successful group. Majoko has been a fixture at the Toronto Jazz Festival\, on jazz.fm91\, at clubs such as The Rex and Poetry\, and at major venues\, including the Harbourfront Centre and the Canadian Opera Company’s Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre. In addition to her talents as a vocalist\, composer\, and arranger\, Majoko has expanded her skills as a multi-instrumentalist\, developing a sense of advanced rhythmic independence by incorporating percussion instruments into her performance practice. In 2021\, she added another important entry to her list of accomplishments: the release of her debut EP\, No Holding Back. \nListen live or watch the broadcast on YouTube.

SUMMARY:Pink Martini featuring China Forbes at the Living Arts Centre
DESCRIPTION:In 1994 in his hometown of Portland\, Oregon\, Thomas Lauderdale was working in local politics when he saw the need for most engaging and inspiring music at political fundraisers. \nDrawing inspiration from music from all over the world–crossing genres of classical\, jazz and old-fashioned pop–and hoping to appeal to conservatives and liberals alike\, he founded the “little orchestra” Pink Martini in 1994 to provide more beautiful and inclusive musical soundtracks for causes such as civil rights\, affordable housing\, the environment\, libraries\, public broadcasting\, education and parks. One year later\, Lauderdale called China Forbes\, a Harvard classmate who was living in New York City\, and asked her to join Pink Martini. Their first song writing collaboration was “Sympathique (Je ne veux pas travailler)”which became an overnight sensation in France\, was nominated for “Song of the Year” at France’s Victoires de la Musique Awards\, and is still the band’s number one song. \nIn 2024 the band is celebrating it’s 30th anniversary!
