SUMMARY:Ellington/Strayhorn "Nutcracker Suite". Fern Lindzon quartet featuring Colleen Allen @ the Jazz Bistro
DESCRIPTION:Ellington’s Nutcracker Suite. A Seasonal Celebration. \nFern Lindzon Jazz Quartet featuring Colleen Allen (flute\, clarinet\, sax)\, Peter Telford (bass)\, Morgan Childs (drums) \nJuno Nominated Jazz pianist and vocalist Fern Lindzon and her quartet will be celebrating the season with a special evening at the Jazz Bistro. Ellington’s Nutcracker\, Charlie Brown’s Christmas\, Sting’s Soul Cake and a special Chanukah song will be sure to make the season bright. \n“I discovered Billy Strayhorn’s amazing symphonic jazz version of Tchaikovsky’s iconic “Nutracker Suite” last June for a concert at the Barrie Jazz Festival with my jazz quartet. Colleen Allen was the first musician I thought of who could re-imagine the orchestral writing with her wide instrumental palette from piccolo to bass clarinet and all of the saxophones. Strayhorn’s arrangement for the Duke Ellington orchestra is imaginative\, quirky and hugely fun to play. With titles such as “Sugar Rum Cherry”\, “Peanut Brittle Brigade” and “Chinoiserie” Strayhorn breathes new life into one of the most beloved orchestral suites ever written.” Fern. Please join us. \n

SUMMARY:Storm Large at Koerner Hall
DESCRIPTION:Storm Large\nat Koerner Hall \nMusician\, actor\, playwright\, author\, awesome. Singer Storm Large of Pink Martini and Rock Star: Supernova fame performs her own brand of in-your-face Broadway\, jazz\, and rock-goddess anthems. The New York Times has called her “sensational.” Not for the faint of heart! \nStorm Large has performed in clubs\, with symphony orchestras all over the USA and UK\, with the New York Pops\, and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Popular Song series\, as well as with Liza Minnelli\, Joel Grey\, and the Pasadena Pops. She has also sung with Grammy Award winner k.d. lang\, pianist Kirill Gerstein\, punk rocker John Doe\, singer/songwriter Rufus Wainwright\, and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer George Clinton. Her autobiographical musical memoir\, Crazy Enough\, played to packed houses in Portland\, at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival\, Adelaide Festival in Australia\, and Joe’s Pub in New York. Her memoir\, Crazy Enough\, was released by Simon and Schuster in 2012\, named Oprah’s Book of the Week\, and awarded the Oregon Book Award for Creative Nonfiction. In the fall of 2014\, Storm & Le Bonheur released a record designed to capture sublime and subversive interpretations of the American Songbook. The recording is a collection of tortured and titillating love songs: beautiful\, familiar\, yet twisted … much like the lady herself. \nADULT CONTENT WARNING: Please be advised that this performance contains adult content and explicit language (with humor). We recommend this concert for adults only.

SUMMARY:Dianne Reeves: Christmas Time is Here
DESCRIPTION:DIANNE REEVES is the pre-eminent jazz vocalist in the world. As a result of her breathtaking virtuosity\, improvisational prowess\, and unique jazz and R&B stylings\, Reeves received the Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Performance for three consecutive recordings—a Grammy first in any vocal category. \n\n\nFeatured in George Clooney’s six-time Academy Award nominated “Good Night\, and Good Luck\,” Reeves won her fourth of five Best Jazz Vocal Grammys for film’s soundtrack. \nReeves has recorded and performed with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. She has also recorded with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted by Daniel Barenboim and was a featured soloist with Sir Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic. Reeves was the first Creative Chair for Jazz for the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the first singer to ever perform at the famed Walt Disney Concert Hall. \nReeves worked with legendary producer Arif Mardin (Norah Jones\, Aretha Franklin) on the Grammy winning A Little Moonlight\, an intimate collection of standards featuring her touring trio. When Reeves’ holiday collection Christmas Time is Here was released\, Ben Ratliff of The New York Times raved\, “Ms. Reeves\, a jazz singer of frequently astonishing skill\, takes the assignment seriously; this is one of the best jazz Christmas CD’s I’ve heard.” \nIn recent years Reeves has toured the world in a variety of contexts including a program entitled “Sing the Truth\,” a musical celebration of Nina Simone which also featured Liz Wright and Angelique Kidjo. She performed at the White House on multiple occasions including President Obama’s State Dinner for the President of China as well as the Governors’ Ball. \nReeves’ latest release\, Beautiful Life\, won the 2015 Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album. Her first album in five years\, Beautiful Life was produced by Terri Lyne Carrington and features Gregory Porter\, Robert Glasper\, Lalah Hathaway\, and Esperanza Spalding. In January 2015 Reeves joined Paul Simon\, James Taylor and Bobby McFerrin in a tribute to Michael Brecker at Jazz at Lincoln Center.
