SUMMARY:Trombone Shorty’s Voodoo Threauxdown at Massey Hall
DESCRIPTION:Trombone Shorty’s Voodoo Threauxdown is a curated mini-festival\, a history of New Orleans music and a vision of where that music is headed in the 21st century. Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue’s music respects Crescent City traditions while pushing the boundaries of those traditions\, adding pop\, rock and hip-hop influences. \nThe other artists on the Threauxdown – Tank and the Bangas\, Big Freedia\, George Porter\, Jr. and Dumpstaphunk playing the music of The Meters\, and The Soul Rebels – are of the same mindset. Together\, they represent different generations coming together to celebrate and advance the sounds of New Orleans in one jam-packed night of live music and collaboration. “These are people that I grew up listening to\, people I came up with\, and people who have been inspired by me and my band. It’s the full package and an expression of what is unique and beautiful about New Orleans.”

SUMMARY:Mavis Staples at Massey Hall
DESCRIPTION:Mavis Staples returns to Massey Hall in Spring 2022. \nHailed by NPR as “one of America’s defining voices of freedom and peace\,” Staples is the kind of once-in-a-generation artist whose impact on music and culture would be difficult to overstate. She’s both a Blues and a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer; a civil rights icon; a GRAMMY Award-winner; a chart-topping soul/gospel/R&B pioneer; a National Arts Awards Lifetime Achievement recipient; and a Kennedy Center honouree. She marched with Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, performed at John F. Kennedy’s inauguration\, and sang in Barack Obama’s White House. She’s collaborated with everyone from Prince and Bob Dylan to Arcade Fire and Hozier\, blown away countless festivalgoers from Newport Folk and Glastonbury to Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo\, performed with The Band at The Last Waltz\, and graced the airwaves on Fallon\, Colbert\, Ellen\, Austin City Limits\, Jools Holland\, the GRAMMYs\, and more. \nAt a time when most artists begin to wind down\, Staples ramped things up\, releasing a trio of critically acclaimed albums in her 70’s with Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy that prompted Pitchfork to rave that “her voice has only gained texture and power over the years” and People to proclaim that she “provides the comfort of a higher power.” In between records with Tweedy\, Staples teamed up with a slew of other younger artists—Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon\, Nick Cave\, Valerie June\, tUnE-yArDs\, and M. Ward among others—for ‘Livin’ On A High Note\,’ an album The Boston Globe called “stunningly fresh and cutting edge” and which first introduced her to Harper.

SUMMARY:Marcus Roberts with the Modern Jazz Generation at Koerner Hall
DESCRIPTION:Do you think that you have heard every interpretation of Beethoven’s music? How about jazz improvisations on Beethoven’s “Moonlight” and “Waldstein” sonatas? That is what Marcus Roberts will perform at this extraordinary “only in Koerner Hall” concert\, alongside variations on Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story and On the Town. A rare and remarkable way of thinking about and hearing two disruptors in their own right. \n“Pianist Marcus Roberts is known for many things: a genius skill that makes him the logical successor to Thelonious Monk’s wild style (with a lot of Fats Waller in his stride)\, an immense love of the blues\, technological innovations in regard to composing for the blind\, and a soulful sense of tradition and invention.”

SUMMARY:Tarragon Theatre presents… The Herd
DESCRIPTION:by Kenneth T. Williams\ndirected by Tara Beagan\nA Tarragon Theatre presentation\, in association with Citadel Theatre and NAC Indigenous Theatre of a Tarragon Theatre/Persephone Theatre Commission \nWhen twin white bison are born into a First Nation herd\, an ambitious blog reporter posts it and the story goes viral. Is this a miracle in the spiritual life of a Saskatchewan First Nation or a one in a billion scientific event? Is this a prophecy coming true or laboratory gene doctoring? \nCulture\, science and politics collide when a media circus and a ‘new age mob’ descend on the herd to witness a sacred prophecy and the scientific goal to achieve 100% pure-bred Bison. Torn between honouring Indigenous traditions\, scientific truth and economic necessity\, one Indigenous scientist battles to keep her ethics intact and her herd alive.
