His live performances are highly energized\, and Vieux is known for dazzling crowds with his speed and dexterity on the guitar\, as well as his palpable charisma and luminous smile\, both of which captivate audiences despite any language barriers (though Vieux does speak eight languages!). \nHailing from Addis Ababa\, Ethiopia\, now based in Toronto\, Melat Mengesha’s music features contemporary\, folk\, and Ethio-jazz roots sounds. Two major influences in her artistic expression are the legendary Ethiopian singers Gigi (Ejigayehu Shibabaw) and Aster Aweke. A major turning point came in 2015\, when Melat won the first season of Balageru (Ethiopian Idol). DESCRIPTION:Hungarian violinist Roby Lakatos dazzles with fiery Roma‑inspired virtuosity. Medusa and Turkwaz\, a powerhouse octet of string players\, percussionists\, and vocalists open the night. \nLakatos is a world-renowned Hungarian violin virtuoso\, directly descended from the legendary 19th-century violinist-composer János Bihari. With his groundbreaking talent – ​​and early professional support from Yehudi Menuhin – Lakatos has performed on many of the world’s greatest stages\, from Carnegie Hall and the Vatican to London’s Royal Albert Hall. His musical greatness has been recognized with numerous international honours\, including being named an Honorary Citizen of Mexico and receiving a major music award from the Spanish Ministry of Culture in 2021. \nTurkwaz is a unique combination of four musician/singers\, immersed in diverse traditions from mysterious Sufi devotional love songs\, to rousing Thracian dance music. Each performer brings a special flavour to the group: Maryem Hassan Tollar draws on her Arabic language heritage; Jayne Brown and Sophia Grigoriadis bring their experience with Greek music; and Brenna MacCrimmon adds Turkish elements to this mix. \nThe electrifying chamber-folk band Medusa Quartet wields ancient fiddle-like instruments that could propel classical music scholars right out of their chairs. He was raised in Los Angeles where his family moved after his father’s death in 1967. His mother\, Alice Coltrane\, was a significant influence on Ravi and it was he who encouraged Alice to return to performance and the recording studio after a long absence. \nEwen Farncombe on piano\, Jesse Ryan on sax\, Norbert Botos on drums\, and Jon Meyer on bass\, open the evening with a Miles Davis set. Farncombe is a Juno Award nominated pianist and composer who has earned a reputation as a highly skilled musician. DESCRIPTION:The Bang on a Can All-Stars have collaborated and toured with fellow New Yorkers Philip Glass and Steve Reich for more than 30 years. This concert features Glassworks\, exclusively arranged by Michael Riesman for Bang on a Can All-Stars\, alongside Reich’s acclaimed rock-infused Electric Counterpoint\, for electric guitar\, in honor of these two outstanding composers during their milestone 90th birthday year. \nIn 1982 Philip Glass became the first composer since Aaron Copland to join the CBS Masterworks label. His first album for Masterworks\, Glassworks\, tripled all sales projections\, and was lauded by audiences and critics alike. But Glass never performed the complete album live with his touring ensemble. Celebrating the legendary composer’s 90th Birthday year (2027)\, Bang on a Can All-Stars perform a brand-new arrangement of the iconic Philip Glass album in its entirety for the very first time. \nBUY TICKETS
