SUMMARY:Snarky Puppy at the Phoenix Concert Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the TD Toronto Jazz Festival\n19+\, Doors open at 10:00pm\, no opening act \n  \nThe last four years have brought dramatic changes for Snarky Puppy. \nAfter a decade of relentless touring and recording in all but complete obscurity\, the Texas-bred/New York-based quasi-collective suddenly found itself held up by the press and public as one of the major figures in the jazz world. But as the category names for all three of the band’s Grammy® awards would indicate (Best R&B Performance in 2014\, Best Contemporary Instrumental Album in 2016 and 2017)\, Snarky Puppy isn’t exactly a jazz band. It’s not a fusion band\, and it’s definitely not a jam band. It’s probably best to take Nate Chinen of the New York Times’ advice\, as stated in an online discussion about the group\, to “take them for what they are\, rather than judge them for what they’re not.” \nSnarky Puppy is a collective of sorts with as many as 25 members in regular rotation. They each maintain busy schedules as sidemen (with such artists as Erykah Badu\, Snoop Dogg\, Kendrick Lamar\, and D’Angelo)\, producers (for Kirk Franklin\, David Crosby\, and Salif Keïta)\, and solo artists (many of whom are on the band’s indy label\, GroundUP Music). At its core\, the band represents the convergence of both black and white American music culture with various accents from around the world. Japan\, Argentina\, Canada\, the United Kingdom\, and Puerto Rico all have representation in the group’s membership. But more than the cultural diversity of the individual players\, the defining characteristic of Snarky Puppy’s music is the joy of performing together in the perpetual push to grow creatively. \nThe band was formed by bassist and primary composer Michael League in 2003\, starting inconspicuously enough as a group of college friends at the University of North Texas’ Jazz Studies program. Three years later\, a serendipitous intersection with the Dallas gospel and R&B community in Dallas transformed the music into something funkier\, more direct\, and more visceral. It was at this time that the group absorbed musicians like Robert “Sput” Searight (drums)\, Shaun Martin (keyboards)\, and Bobby Sparks (keyboards)\, and were heavily influenced by legendary keyboardist Bernard Wright (Miles Davis\, Chaka Khan\, Marcus Miller).

Inspired and informed by art of the 20th century\, David Hodgson (saxophone)\, Evan Gratham (bass)\, and Keith Barstow (drums) transform qualities otherwise reserved for visual arts (such as colour\, form\, and space) into a musical medium. Stil Trio attempts to recreate visualisation through their shared musical experiences\, unique improvisational voices\, and compositional structures and arrangements. Their music is highly expressive and nuanced\, while still full of energy and groove.

SUMMARY:Herbie Hancock & Kamasi Washington
DESCRIPTION:Herbie Hancock\nHerbie Hancock is a true icon of modern music. Throughout his explorations\, he has transcended limitations and genres while maintaining his unmistakable voice. With an illustrious career spanning five decades and 14 Grammy® Awards\, including Album of the Year for River: The Joni Letters\, he continues to amaze audiences across the globe. \nThere are few artists in the music industry who have had more influence on acoustic and electronic jazz and R&B than Herbie Hancock. As the immortal Miles Davis said in his autobiography\, “Herbie was the step after Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk\, and I haven’t heard anybody yet who has come after him.” Now in the fifth decade of his professional life\, Herbie Hancock remains where he has always been: in the forefront of world culture\, technology\, business and music. Though one can’t track exactly where he will go next\, he is sure to leave his inimitable imprint wherever he lands. \nKamasi Washington\nWhen Kamasi Washington released his tour de force LP\, The Epic\, in 2015\, it instantly set him on a path as our generation’s torchbearer for progressive\, improvisational music that would open the door for young audiences to experience music unlike anything they had heard before\, and exceeded any notions of what “jazz” music is. \nWashington followed that work with collaborations with other influential artists such as Kendrick Lamar\, John Legend\, Run the Jewels\, Ibeyi and the creation of “Harmony of Difference\,” a standalone multimedia installation during the prestigious 2017 Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. In June 2018\, Washington released Heaven and Earth to wide praise. The album garnered “best of” awards from Pitchfork\, NPR\, Variety\, GQ\, MOJO\, and Complex among others.

In the late 80’s Mays recorded for DMP (duet records with Ray Drummond) and in 1992 released several discs on Concord. These dates found Mays in a variety of settings\, beginning with the unaccompanied Live at Maybeck Recital Hall\, Vol. 26 (Bill Mays at Maybeck)\, followed by a trio date An Ellington Affair\, a duet with guitarist Ed Bickett Concord Duo\, Vol. 7: Bill Mays and Ed Bickert and finallly backed by a full band on Mays in Manhattan. In 2001 the pianist recorded his 11th album as a leader and his first for the Palmetto label\, Summer Sketches\, followed two years later by Going Home. \nLorne Lofsky is an internationally recognized jazz guitarist.
