SUMMARY:Copland's Clarinet + Enigma Variations @ Roy Thompson Hall
DESCRIPTION:RBC Resident Conductor Trevor Wilson leads an entrancing program that showcases the people\, places\, and things from which composers often draw inspiration. Canadian composer Dinuk Wijeratne’s Polyphonic Lively opens—a kaleidoscope of orchestral timbres that weaves together elements of jazz\, rock\, and classical music\, drawing inspiration from a painting by the Swiss-German artist Paul Klee. Then\, Elgar’s popular “Enigma Variations” depict his friends and acquaintances in miniature musical portraits\, providing a hint of intrigue as to their identities. Vaughan Williams’s corresponding variations\, a collection of folk iterations across time\, pays sweeping homage to the English countryside. Finally\, Copland’s jazz-influenced Clarinet Concerto channels the legendary Benny Goodman for whom it was commissioned—a showpiece of technical virtuosity performed by Toronto Symphony Orchestra Principal Clarinet Eric Abramovitz. \nTickets start at $42

SUMMARY:High Arctic Light: Janet Read @ Niagara Pumphouse Arts Centre
DESCRIPTION:At the heart of the exhibition lies a spiritual response to the landscape and the imperiled ecosystems of the northernmost reaches. Janet translates her personal dialogue with the landscape into a visual language that evokes emotion and contemplation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nOverview\nThe public is warmly welcomed to the opening reception on Sunday\, October 15th\, 2023\, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. Attendees will have the exclusive opportunity to personally engage with the artist\, savour the artwork\, and connect with fellow art enthusiasts over refreshments and hors d’oeuvres. Janet Read will offer remarks around 2:30 pm. This event is generously supported by Château des Charmes\, providing an assortment of fine wines. \nThe artist wishes to acknowledge funding support from the Ontario Arts Council\, an agency of the Government of Ontario. \nArtist’s Statement\n“in place of the beholder there is a rememberer.”\n-Howard Hodgkin \nI work from experience and memory. Recent travels in the high Arctic in 2018 and 2023 inform current work. The arctic experience nourishes and sustains my imagination\, especially during the past pandemic years. Memory\, hope\, and experience are made tangible in the act of painting. \nMy work stems from a deep connection to place and an immersion in the natural world. Paint is applied spontaneously in a process of improvisation refined over the period of the painting process. Gesture and mark making are integral in my work. \nCultivation of the wild through Indigenous leadership can maintain a balance in this delicate environment. As Susie Evyagotalak\, a leader from Kugluktut says; “Our garden is the sea.” \nSee beauty.\nHonour the land. \nThe high Arctic ignites my imagination with austerity\, light\, space\, fragility\, and beauty. My response: abstract visual explorations of light\, earth and sea.

SUMMARY:Gatsby @ City Playhouse
DESCRIPTION:It’s the roaring twenties! The jazz age is in full swing as economic prosperity sweeps the nation and American women are finally beginning to experience new freedom and independence led by the flapper movement. The prohibition has just been enacted in the United States\, forbidding the production and importation of alcoholic beverages. But despite this\, the parties are becoming increasingly glamorous\, as Americans dance the night away to jazz music\, which is accelerating rapidly in popularity. Amidst the glittering parties is a mysterious man named Gatsby. Rumours circulate fiercely about Gatsby; however his true identity is known to none. All that is known of this man is that he hosts large parties for all of the city. When the quiet yet observant Nick Carraway moves next door to Gatsby’s house\, he quickly learns of this strange figure. And Gatsby is on the hunt for one thing\, and one thing only – his former love\, Daisy Buchanan. \nGatsby is a jazz musical composed by Laura Nobili\, based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. It features 22 dazzling musical numbers orchestrated for big band and will be performed by talented emerging actors and singers. \nLaura Nobili is the composer\, producer\, and director of Gatsby. From solo music to large ensembles\, Nobili has written a wide array of instrumentations for professional and student musicians across the country. She is the composer of the piano book The Rainbow of Music\, as well as\, a co-author of A Journey Through Canada and has won several competitions for solo and large ensemble composition. In July 2022\, she composed Macbeth the Musical. The show\, which she produced and directed\, premiered in May 2023. Nobili also teaches piano and flute\, in addition to performing classical voice\, flute and piano.

SUMMARY:The Whiteley Family: Ken\, Chris\, Ben & Jesse
DESCRIPTION:The rare opportunity to see Chris and Ken together on stage. \nGood things take time. Brothers Chris and Ken Whiteley have spent years becoming well versed in a multitude of musical styles by drawing inspiration from many wells. Whether playing blues\, swing\, jazz\, gospel\, rhythm and blues\, jug band or folk\, the brothers do it with finesse\, respect and intimate knowledge. These qualities have served them very\, very well. \nChris and Ken’s list of musical accomplishments thus far reads like a list of dream goals talented musicians would set for their entire careers. Since the sixties\, The Whiteley Brothers\, together and individually\, have been in demand as performers\, multi-instrumentalist session players\, songwriters and producers. With over 150 recordings between them\, eight Juno nominations\, Blues Album of the Year Award\, multiple Lifetime Achievement Awards\, and countless festival appearances\, the two have explored their musical creativity to great critical and popular success. Among many others\, they’ve worked with John Hammond Jr.\, Leon Redbone\, Blind John Davis\, Guy Davis\, The Campbell Brothers\, and were the first Canadian act invited to perform at the prestigious Chicago Blues Festival. And throughout\, the brothers have continued to create their own blues inspired music. \nTaking Our Time is nothing but the brothers! Chris and Ken Whiteley composed\, wrote\, played\, sang and produced every note you hear; strings\, percussion\, keyboards\, winds and voices. Read that part again if you must. It is rare to find musicians who can pull something like this off. Each piece is produced lovingly\, with respect for the song. What defines many of these new songs is timelessness. These songs hit home or as John Valentyn in the Maple Blues put it\, “some of the very best new songs I’ve heard anywhere.” The Whiteley Brothers have provided us with a glimpse of the past\, present and future in this very new and very wonderful recording. Rarely\, but sometimes\, water from a new source enters the well.

SUMMARY:Kind of Blue Revisited @ The Gasworks
DESCRIPTION:The Hamilton Music Collective presents its 2023 jazz concert series. \nFeaturing: \nPat LaBarbera – Tenor Saxophone \nNick Morgan – Alto Saxophone \nKevin Turcotte – Trumpet \nMark Eisenman – Piano \nDave Young – Bass \nTerry Clarke – Drums \nAbout Kind of Blue \nAllMusic senior editor Stephen Thomas Erlewine stated: “Kind of Blue isn’t merely an artistic highlight for Miles Davis\, it’s an album that towers above its peers\, a record generally considered as the definitive jazz album\, a universally acknowledged standard of excellence. Why does Kind of Blue possess such a mystique? Perhaps because this music never flaunts its genius. … It’s the pinnacle of modal jazz — tonality and solos build from the overall key\, not chord changes\, giving the music a subtly shifting quality. … It may be a stretch to say that if you don’t like Kind of Blue\, you don’t like jazz — but it’s hard to imagine it as anything other than a cornerstone of any jazz collection.”
