A vital part of the outstanding soul\, funk and reggae scenes on Toronto’s Yonge Street in the 1970s\, he has spent the past 15 years performing around the world\, including as bandleader for the acclaimed From Jamaica to Toronto project\, earning awards along the way. \nRecorded at the iconic Reggae Café in Toronto’s vibrant Little Jamaica neighbourhood\, an ethnic and cultural hub for Caribbean and African immigrants\, and a global hotbed for reggae culture. Today the area features the largest concentration of Black-owned businesses in Toronto\, including barber shops\, restaurants\, Black aesthetics and hair shops\, recording studios\, music stores and more.

She started playing drums at age two and her first stage performance was at age five. Thawer works internationally with different artists and musicians\, as well as solo and with her own band. She is known for being a versatile musician\, playing a wide range of genres from jazz and fusion to Indian/world\, funk\, R&B and hip hop. Thawer has performed and worked with artists including Jacob Collier\, Steve Vai\, George Watsky\, SheilaE.\, Jon Batiste\, A.R. Rahman\, Nicholas Payton\, Nigel Hall\, Myron McKinley\, Sekou Bunch\, Mark Lettieri\, Tegan and Sara\, Char (Hisato Takenaka) and Osman Mir.

Presented by TD\, the Summer Concert Series highlights 10 local acts who each bring their own unique perspective to the performance of jazz\, and reflect a variety of the elements which have been part of the Festival over the past 35 years: from emerging artists and young lions to the best of the best; from traditional jazz to new sounds; from mentorship to community connections. \nThe Toronto Jazz Festival burst out of the gates in 1987 with eight days of outstanding music. That first Festival established our mandate of featuring the best jazz musicians from Toronto\, across the country and around the world – and Canadian jazz treasure Jane Bunnett was there. Jane played the first ever Toronto Jazz Festival and since then has remained a Festival regular\, showcasing her substantial and varied body of work.
