SUMMARY:Spectrum Music presents: Jests in Time!
DESCRIPTION:Spectrum Music presents: Jests in Time! \nNo matter who we are or where we come from\, we all love to laugh. For centuries\, we have revelled in the humour of light-hearted jests and gags as vehicles to express our amusement and joy. But what happens when comedy takes a dark turn – when we use humour to cover up our insecurities and resentment? The Spectrum composers\, guest composer Simone Baron\, and 2019 New Voices Composer in Residence\, Noah Franche-Nolan\, contemplate the complexity of comedy. \nA dangerously hilarious pre-concert monologue by an emerging Toronto comedian will open the stage for a whimsical ensemble featuring accordionist Simone Baron\, the Odin Quartet\, and interpretive dance by Alex Pollard. \nPROGRAM:\nChelsea McBride – The Rearview Mirror\nMason Victoria – The Day When Robots Learn to Feel\nJackson Welchner – Pagliacci\nGraham Campbell – Little Fellow\nTiffany Hanus – Are You Kidding?\nNoah Franche-Nolan (2019 NVCR) – Trois Variations\n& a piece by guest composer and performer\, Simone Baron! \nDoor tickets – $20 general / $15 student\nAdvance tickets (online) – $15 general / $10 student \nPhone: 416-576-8890 for more info \nEmail: zoe@spectrummusic.ca

SUMMARY:Nicole Connelly Quartet & Virginia MacDonald
DESCRIPTION:Coming all the way from Baltimore Maryland (or Towson… or Brooklyn whatever) is trombonist Nicole Connelly presenting some of her own/her favorite works with a could rad local dudes. Our first night of two days together! Come check out this awesome band. \nNicole Connelly – Trombone\nHarrison Argatoff – Tenor\nAlex Fournier – Bass\nNick Fraser – Drums \nTrombonist and improviser Nicole Connelly grew up in the small rural town of Tolland\, CT. From a non-musical family\, Nicole\, alongside her twin sister Erin\, started to develop a relationship with music while attending Tolland High School and the Litchfield Jazz Camp. These formative experiences brought long-lasting musical friendships and developed her desire to pursue a musical education and career. \nStarting in 2012\, as a Jazz and Commercial Music Major at Towson University\, Nicole was immersed in the world of improvisation and found refuge in creative music\, the “avant-garde”. With limitless possibilities and a landscape of sounds\, this gave way to finding her distinct voice. \nWhile still in school\, Nicole founded the Creative Music Consortium in March 2016\, now co-curated with Baltimore-based drummer Asher Herzog\, to provide musicians in the surrounding area with a creative musical outlet. Nicole graduated from Towson University in 2016 with a Bachelors degree in Jazz/Commercial Music. After spending a year playing Trombone professionally in Baltimore full-time\, she now resides in New York City where she continues her creative and professional journey.

SUMMARY:Peter Boyd: Cruel & Unusual
DESCRIPTION:Peter Boyd has been a songwriter for over thirty years. Drawing on gospel and blues from Chicago all the way back to the Delta and re-invented upside-down-and-backwards\, Peter’s songs are a sepia-tinged glimpse into his messy\, not-fully-developed soul where faith has as much a chance as folly to send you careening into the abyss. \nPeter’s new CD Beulahland is garnering great reviews\, most recently a rave from Greg Quill in the Toronto Star: “Stunning and powerful blues-rooted original songs and astonishing guitar wizardry. Among the best of the year’s roots/blues crop.”

SUMMARY:Bossa Tres & Thomas Steele Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Bossa Tres\nBossa Três has been performing Bossa Nova and Brazilian Samba classics\, as well as a variety of Brazilian rarities and original material since 2001. Their repertoire draws from the greatest of the Brazilian composers and performers like Ary Barroso\, Dorival Caymmi\, Antônio Carlos Jobim\, Newton Mendoça\, João Gilberto\, Chico Buarque and Caetano Veloso. \nBossa Três leader Victor Monsivais: vocalist\, songwriter\, guitarist; has been playing and singing Bossa Nova for over forty years\, in particular the music of Antônio Carlos Jobim who\, along with Thelonious Monk and Jimmy Van Heusen\, is one of his favorite composers. The Trio consists of Victor\, who sings Jobim’s songs in their original Portuguese versions and plays the guitar with the true Bossa beat; bassist Frank Sants who plays a deep and mellow-toned bass\, and drummer/percussionist Federico Monsivais who plays with a soft\, classical feel\, yet\, with the attack and syncopation of authentic Latin rhythm. \nThe rarely heard hard-smooth Brazilian and Latin percussion of Bossa Três recreates the atmosphere of a quiet night in Copacabana… the mood of a Carnival in Bahia…a hot Tropicana session in La Habana\, or the romance of a classical jazz evening. Bossa Três’ performances bring life to the pieces they play\, creating an aura of “alegría and saudade” which are the two basic ingredients of Brazilian music. Bossa Três often appears as a quartet or quintet featuring talented guest musicians\, this evening\, pianist Dan Farrell and Tenor Saxophone\, Clarinet and Flute player Brendan Cassidy\, both a perfect fit to Jobim’s music and long time Victor’s associates\, will be joining the ensemble. \nThomas Steele Quartet\nThomas Steele is an emerging musician and educator in Toronto. \nThomas has had the opportunity to learn alongside and work with many of North America’s top faces in jazz\, including Maria Schneider\, Mike Murley\, Gordon Foote\, Tara Davidson\, Alex Dean\, Rich Brown and Collen Allen amongst others. \nA saxophonist and woodwind doubler\, Thomas has enjoyed performance opportunities through both big band and small jazz ensembles. He has participated in a variety of music festivals across Toronto\, ON and Montreal\, QC\, leading to invitations to perform across North America\, from Niagara Falls\, ON to the Berklee College of Music in Boston\, MA. \nThomas has had the fortuity to perform across Canada including Toronto\, Ontario’s Rex Hotel Jazz and Blues Bar\, Lula Lounge and Emmet Ray\, as well as Upstairs Jazz Bar and Grill in Montreal\, QC. You can find Thomas performing in Toronto regularly with his co-led quintet\, his standards quartet\, as a member of University of Toronto jazz ensembles\, or as a sideman.

Cole is performing classic as well as tracks from her new album – her first in five years – the simply titled\, HOLLY\, that features her rendition of George Gershwin’s I Was Doing All Right. \nWhat the critics say about Holly Cole: \n“A Cole recording or performance is something of a deli smoothie: she throws the raw materials into a musical blender\, and out comes a tall cool refreshment.” – Vancouver Sun \n“She exudes as much fun as feeling in concert treating the people to a rare performance that was musically rewarding and refreshingly intimate.” – Calgary Herald \nTickets may be purchased here or by contacting the box office at 613-476-8416 (ext. 28) between 12 pm and 3 pm Monday through Saturday.

SUMMARY:The Sonny Balcones & Harley Card
DESCRIPTION:The Sonny Balcones\nThe Sonny Balcones are a Toronto jazz favorite\, who plays familiar and rare jazz tunes with their own unique style. \nThe band was formed in 2015 by guitarist/singer Tony Neale and singer Corry Ouellette\, following their work together in The Sandy Pockets and The Julee Cruise Ships\, a tribute to Twin Peaks. \nAlongside Rachel Melas on bass\, Robert Stevenson on clarinet and Conny Nowe on drums\, this group has honed a sound that is both quirky and romantic. \nThink of Chet Baker and Julie London\, sometimes sultry\, sometimes heartbreaking. Follow that with a modern day Ruth Etting and some silly swing. Top it off with a bit of Joao Gilberto. \nHarley Card\nHarley Card is a Toronto based guitarist\, composer\, and freelance musician. As a contributor to the creative music scene in Toronto for the past decade\, Harley has played with many artists including; Richard Underhill\, Alex Dean\, Alex Samaras\, William Carn\, Michael Herring\, Sarah Jerrom\, Michael Davidson\, Don Scott\, David Virelles\, Felicity Williams\, Dave Clark\, Carlie Howell\, Jon Challoner\, Colin Power\, RJ Sachnanathan\, Ian Sinclair\, Kurt Neilson\, Matt Newton\, Dan Fortin\, Ernesto Cervini\, Ben Dietschi\, Jesse Malone\, Dan Gaucher\, Caitlin Smith\, and Scott Kemp among others. \nHarley is a member/composer for the Toronto groups; Hobson’s Choice\, The Harley Card Trio\, The Harley Card Quintet\, God’s Gift To Yoda\, and Stoptime. Each ensemble has performed extensively in Canada and released multiple recordings. Hobson’s Choice’s recent Barnyard Records release; “Of The Waves”\, was premiered at The 2012 TD Toronto Downtown Jazz Festival.

SUMMARY:Nat Cole: A King’s Centennial with Paul Marinaro and the Ben Paterson Trio
DESCRIPTION:Bravo Niagara! Festival of the Arts presents Nat Cole: A King’s Centennial with Paul Marinaro and the Ben Paterson Trio\nNathaniel Adams Cole was born in the southern United States (Montgomery\, Alabama) in 1919. From dropping out of high school in 1934 to pursue his love for music full time\, to being a champion of the Civil Rights Movement\, Nat “King” Cole will forever be remembered as one of the most celebrated and cherished jazz pianists and vocalists that we will ever see. To celebrate his centennial in 2019\, Céline Peterson (daughter of legendary jazz pianist Oscar Peterson) has brought together four dynamic artists to present a unique tribute in honor of Nat’s life and career. Led by vocalist Paul Marinaro\, this show delves into the repertoire of Cole’s that many have yet to discover. \nCole’s classic versions of songs we all know and love are the perfect hybrid of simple and intricate. His ability to make his execution of every performance seem almost effortless\, is what makes the planning of the ideal tribute to him even more challenging. There are certain complexities that his music requires that only select vocalists will be able to properly deliver in such a way that both captures the classic sound everyone wants to hear\, while ensuring that their own musical styles come through as well. Marinaro’s velvety baritone and lush intricacies have been wowing audiences in Chicago for over fifteen years. Says Scott Yanow of LA Jazz Scene; “Marinaro takes his place among the top five male jazz singers active today.” \nNat “King” Cole established himself first and foremost as a pianist. His “King Cole Trio” was a source of inspiration for many jazz players that followed\, including the man holding the piano chair for this show\, Philadelphia native Ben Paterson. Paterson’s swinging interpretations of tunes easily recognizable from Cole’s repertoire as well as that of Ray Charles\, Oscar Peterson\, Stevie Wonder\, have guided Ben along the path of solidifying himself as one of the top pianists currently working on the New York jazz scene. One of the greatest challenges that an artist in the jazz genre faces is ensuring that their own style takes centre stage while performing songs that many have heard (and that some would consider previously perfected). There are many layers to Ben’s talent\, but his rhythmic sensibility and impeccable time are the two that made him the first choice for this particular musical task. Downbeat Magazine says Paterson is “As soulful a pianist/organist as exists anywhere.” \nThe many firsts that Cole’s career saw for him were more than just the firsts for one man – they were the firsts for an entire race of human beings. In 1956\, NBC gave Nat his own television variety show\, which would make him the first Black man to host a show of that kind. The same year\, Cole was performing in his home state of Alabama\, when he was attacked on-stage by not one\, not two\, but six white men. The planned attack caused Cole to cancel the shows that were to follow and also left him with a back injury. At this time\, Nat was one of the highest-paid and most successful working men not just in the United States\, but globally. However during this period of deep racial tension and what (at that time) was considered to be one of the most violent times in the US\, to many he was just another colored-man taking a spot away from a white man. Through multiple run-ins with the Ku Klux Klan\, attacks\, tainted career opportunities\, and just about every obstacle you could face in the 1950s and 1960s as a person of color\, Nat still managed to not only continue performing\, but doing it better than almost anyone else to this day. \nWhile there are many wonderful tributes to Nat’s music that have taken place\, Nat Cole: A King’s Centennial honors the entire legacy of a man who spent his entire career defying odds and paving the way for countless musicians since him to be able to sing their songs in a world where they are not defined by the color of their skin\, but by the way in which they choose to utilize their talents. The excellence that Nat “King” Cole demonstrated on a daily basis lives within the hearts and souls of the musicians taking the stage for this show\, and it is a privilege to be able to share the music with those who want to listen.

SUMMARY:Brendan Varty's Tessellate
DESCRIPTION:Brenden Varty’s Tessellate\nMulti-instrumentalist Brenden Varty and his unique blend of contemporary and chamber music has been piercing the Toronto music scene in recent years. After many years of performance and musical study in and around his hometown\, Brenden decided to continue his musical studies at Humber College (which he graduated from with highest honours is 2016)\, immersing himself in an environment that fosters both a jazz and contemporary-classical tradition. \nWhile at Humber\, Brenden gained proficiency in many instruments\, including\, but not limited to\, flute\, clarinet\, bass clarinet\, and baritone saxophone\, and his teachers include Alex Dean\, Pat LaBarbera\, Andy Ballantyne\, David Occhipinti\, and Shirantha Beddage. \nBrenden is also an ambitious composer and arranger\, and works to combine contemporary jazz with chamber music\, similar to those attempts made by John Zorn\, Jim Hall\, and Brad Mehldau. DESCRIPTION:Written by Hannah Moscovitch With songs by Ben Caplan & Christian Barry Toronto premiere \nA humourously dark folktale woven together with a high-energy concert. This genre-bending music-theatre hybrid starring Klezmer folk sensation Ben Caplan is inspired by the real life story of Moscovitch’s Romanian-Jewish great-grandparents who immigrated to Canada in 1908. SUMMARY:Ms. Lisa Fischer & Grand Baton
DESCRIPTION:As featured in the Oscar and GRAMMY winning documentary 20 Feet from Stardom\, Ms. Lisa Fischer stepped out from behind the backing mic to take centre stage. Two GRAMMY wins later\, while still extensively touring with The Rolling Stones for nearly 30 years (yes\, she passionately belts it out in a legendary duet with Mick Jagger on Gimme Shelter)\, Fischer and her band Grand Baton have been gaining a reputation internationally for their dynamic live performances. \nTheir music is an organic gumbo of progressive rock\, psychedelic soul\, R&B and African\, Middle Eastern\, Caribbean rhythms and classical influences. In performance\, they re-invent songs by Led Zeppelin\, Little Willie John\, and of course The Rolling Stones as well as originals. After decades of also lending her vocal mastery to collaborations\, recordings and tours with Sting\, Chris Botti\, Tina Turner\, Yo Yo Ma\, Nine Inch Nails\, Luther Vandross and many more\, Ms. Lisa Fischer and Grand Baton have emerged as the most inventive and heartfelt interpreter of classic rock songs working today.
