SUMMARY:jazz.fm91 and MRG Live present: GoGo Penguin at The Opera House
DESCRIPTION:MRG Live/jazz.fm Presale: Jan 25 @ 10am ET (code: JAZZFM)\nPublic On Sale: Jan 27 @ 10am ET \nEmotive\, cinematic break-beat trio GoGo Penguin are back\, playing music from their exhilarating new album Everything Is Going to Be OK – April 2023 (Sony records XXIM)\, together with songs from their luminous back catalogue. Bursting with the optimism of new beginnings\, with a new drummer\, a new record label and a subtly updated and developed sound\, the band are ushering in a more sonically liberated era. \nEverything Is Going to Be OK is born from a time of turbulence and loss. During a personally difficult period for the band\, including deep personal loss and mourning\, the studio offered the band a sanctuary from real life. The resulting project draws its strength from a shared understanding and empathy. Through our hardships\, together\, we will emerge stronger; everything is going to be ok.

SUMMARY:The Shuffle Demons at Koerner Hall
DESCRIPTION:With special guests Skratch Bastid and Caity Gyorgy \nHigh-energy virtuosic jazz and funk\, and over-the-top stage antics have thrilled audiences for decades since their 1980s MuchMusic hit “Spadina Bus.” \nThe legend of The Shuffle Demons is well known to Canadians. Beginning in September 1984 with veteran street sax player Demon Richard Underhill pleasing the pedestrian multitudes at the corner of Yonge and Bloor in Toronto\, The Shuffle Demons quickly evolved into an immensely popular street band. In 1986\, John Gunn and Rob Fresco directed “Spadina Bus\,” the video that became a MuchMusic hit\, and was quickly followed by the hilarious “Out of My House\, Roach” (directed by Joel Goldberg). The Demons caught fire\, sold more independent albums than anyone up to that point (15\,000)\, were nominated for a Juno Award\, won five CASBY Awards\, toured like mad\, and released their second album\, Bop Rap\, which featured a very popular rendition of “Hockey Night in Canada.” \nThis band is genre bending\, highly visually entertaining\, funny\, and best of all\, their eye catching\, crowd-pleasing stunts are backed up by incredibly solid musicianship. Over the course of their illustrious career The Shuffle Demons have released 10 CDs\, four hit videos\, won several music awards\, done numerous TV and radio appearances\, and toured nationally and internationally. The band continues the tradition today with a great line-up of players that includes Juno Award winner Richard Underhill (sax & vox)\, Matt Lagan and Kelly Jefferson (saxes)\, Mike Downes (bass)\, and Stich Wynston (drums). Expect the same exciting\, no holds barred performances that feature wild romps in the crowd\, free jazz moments\, danceable funk\, poetry\, killer solos\, and more. \nFor the past two decades\, Skratch Bastid has been rocking parties and wowing crowds all over the globe\, becoming one of the world’s best known and most loved DJs. Known for his electric stage presence\, technical prowess\, and versatile selections that span the complete musical spectrum – from hip hop to house\, disco to dancehall\, reggae to funk and back again – Bastid is a true crowd favourite with an unrivaled ability to create unforgettable moments with music. \nCaity Gyorgy is a two-time Juno Award-winning Canadian vocalist who is known for singing bebop and swing music. She has performed at popular clubs and jazz festivals across Canada and the USA and has worked and recorded with incredible musicians and groups including Christine Jensen\, Pat LaBarbera\, Jocelyn Gould\, Ira Coleman\, Allison Au\, Bryn Roberts and Postmodern Jukebox\, to name a few. In addition to performing\, Caity is also an avid writer and composes songs in the style of the Great American Songbook. Her compositions have been sung by other vocalists around the world\, and she has released several albums of original and standard music. \nAfter the concert\, enjoy a beverage and more music at the Postlude Performance.

Performing for your pleasure are the sensational Dizzy & Fay. \nMuch like a well balanced cocktail\, songwriting duo Dizzy & Fay have undeniable chemistry. Their intuitive musical charm is captivating on record and on stage where audiences are fast becoming lifelong fans. \nBased in Toronto and Fenwick\, Ont.\, these two songsmiths arrived on the Canadian jazz scene with their debut album Songbook\, which received a glowing review from The Wholenote and made several top 20 in 2021 lists. \nNow\, just a year later\, Dizzy & Fay have released their sophomore album Hooked. SUMMARY:Jazz at the Centre: Thompson Egbo-Egbo
DESCRIPTION:The Canadian Music Centre (CMC) is thrilled to continue our Jazz at the Centre series featuring acclaimed composer and pianist\, Thompson Egbo-Egbo with a very special solo piano concert. Thompson has a gift for memorable and harmonically complex composition that have at their core a deep\, abiding groove. \nHis recent album\, What Remains is a “brilliant and impassioned work” that is inspired by the shifts and impacts of the pandemic.  “The entire album tells a story with its influences of jazz\, classic rock and Latin influences. Its musical pieces resemble hills\, valleys\, or even rollercoaster rides.” \nAbout Thompson Egbo-Egbo \nThompson Egbo-Egbo moved to Toronto from Nigeria when he was 4\, and started dedicating himself to the piano when he was six. A rambunctious and free spirit was channeled in a creative direction with piano lessons at an inner-city music school. He earned a degree in Music from Humber College and studied electronic production and design at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Thompson served as a member of the board of Dixon Hall for many years\, and is currently on the board of jazz.fm91.   He founded The Thompson T. Egbo-Egbo Arts Foundation\, which strives to fill a void in the education of music and arts not found in many communities by partnering with talented Canadian artists who are dedicated to creating a resource for under-served Canadian youth to advance in music and the arts.
