SUMMARY:The Sonny Balcones & Harley Card
DESCRIPTION:The Sonny Balcones\nThe Sonny Balcones are a Toronto jazz favorite\, who plays familiar and rare jazz tunes with their own unique style. \nThe band was formed in 2015 by guitarist/singer Tony Neale and singer Corry Ouellette\, following their work together in The Sandy Pockets and The Julee Cruise Ships\, a tribute to Twin Peaks. \nAlongside Rachel Melas on bass\, Robert Stevenson on clarinet and Conny Nowe on drums\, this group has honed a sound that is both quirky and romantic. \nThink of Chet Baker and Julie London\, sometimes sultry\, sometimes heartbreaking. Follow that with a modern day Ruth Etting and some silly swing. Top it off with a bit of Joao Gilberto. \nHarley Card\nHarley Card is a Toronto based guitarist\, composer\, and freelance musician. As a contributor to the creative music scene in Toronto for the past decade\, Harley has played with many artists including; Richard Underhill\, Alex Dean\, Alex Samaras\, William Carn\, Michael Herring\, Sarah Jerrom\, Michael Davidson\, Don Scott\, David Virelles\, Felicity Williams\, Dave Clark\, Carlie Howell\, Jon Challoner\, Colin Power\, RJ Sachnanathan\, Ian Sinclair\, Kurt Neilson\, Matt Newton\, Dan Fortin\, Ernesto Cervini\, Ben Dietschi\, Jesse Malone\, Dan Gaucher\, Caitlin Smith\, and Scott Kemp among others. \nHarley is a member/composer for the Toronto groups; Hobson’s Choice\, The Harley Card Trio\, The Harley Card Quintet\, God’s Gift To Yoda\, and Stoptime. Each ensemble has performed extensively in Canada and released multiple recordings. Hobson’s Choice’s recent Barnyard Records release; “Of The Waves”\, was premiered at The 2012 TD Toronto Downtown Jazz Festival.

SUMMARY:Bossa Tres & Thomas Steele Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Bossa Tres\nBossa Três has been performing Bossa Nova and Brazilian Samba classics\, as well as a variety of Brazilian rarities and original material since 2001. Their repertoire draws from the greatest of the Brazilian composers and performers like Ary Barroso\, Dorival Caymmi\, Antônio Carlos Jobim\, Newton Mendoça\, João Gilberto\, Chico Buarque and Caetano Veloso. \nBossa Três leader Victor Monsivais: vocalist\, songwriter\, guitarist; has been playing and singing Bossa Nova for over forty years\, in particular the music of Antônio Carlos Jobim who\, along with Thelonious Monk and Jimmy Van Heusen\, is one of his favorite composers. The Trio consists of Victor\, who sings Jobim’s songs in their original Portuguese versions and plays the guitar with the true Bossa beat; bassist Frank Sants who plays a deep and mellow-toned bass\, and drummer/percussionist Federico Monsivais who plays with a soft\, classical feel\, yet\, with the attack and syncopation of authentic Latin rhythm. \nThe rarely heard hard-smooth Brazilian and Latin percussion of Bossa Três recreates the atmosphere of a quiet night in Copacabana… the mood of a Carnival in Bahia…a hot Tropicana session in La Habana\, or the romance of a classical jazz evening. Bossa Três’ performances bring life to the pieces they play\, creating an aura of “alegría and saudade” which are the two basic ingredients of Brazilian music. Bossa Três often appears as a quartet or quintet featuring talented guest musicians\, this evening\, pianist Dan Farrell and Tenor Saxophone\, Clarinet and Flute player Brendan Cassidy\, both a perfect fit to Jobim’s music and long time Victor’s associates\, will be joining the ensemble. \nThomas Steele Quartet\nThomas Steele is an emerging musician and educator in Toronto. \nThomas has had the opportunity to learn alongside and work with many of North America’s top faces in jazz\, including Maria Schneider\, Mike Murley\, Gordon Foote\, Tara Davidson\, Alex Dean\, Rich Brown and Collen Allen amongst others. \nA saxophonist and woodwind doubler\, Thomas has enjoyed performance opportunities through both big band and small jazz ensembles. He has participated in a variety of music festivals across Toronto\, ON and Montreal\, QC\, leading to invitations to perform across North America\, from Niagara Falls\, ON to the Berklee College of Music in Boston\, MA. \nThomas has had the fortuity to perform across Canada including Toronto\, Ontario’s Rex Hotel Jazz and Blues Bar\, Lula Lounge and Emmet Ray\, as well as Upstairs Jazz Bar and Grill in Montreal\, QC. You can find Thomas performing in Toronto regularly with his co-led quintet\, his standards quartet\, as a member of University of Toronto jazz ensembles\, or as a sideman.

SUMMARY:Peter Boyd: Cruel & Unusual
DESCRIPTION:Peter Boyd has been a songwriter for over thirty years. Drawing on gospel and blues from Chicago all the way back to the Delta and re-invented upside-down-and-backwards\, Peter’s songs are a sepia-tinged glimpse into his messy\, not-fully-developed soul where faith has as much a chance as folly to send you careening into the abyss. \nPeter’s new CD Beulahland is garnering great reviews\, most recently a rave from Greg Quill in the Toronto Star: “Stunning and powerful blues-rooted original songs and astonishing guitar wizardry. Among the best of the year’s roots/blues crop.”

SUMMARY:Nicole Connelly Quartet & Virginia MacDonald
DESCRIPTION:Coming all the way from Baltimore Maryland (or Towson… or Brooklyn whatever) is trombonist Nicole Connelly presenting some of her own/her favorite works with a could rad local dudes. Our first night of two days together! Come check out this awesome band. \nNicole Connelly – Trombone\nHarrison Argatoff – Tenor\nAlex Fournier – Bass\nNick Fraser – Drums \nTrombonist and improviser Nicole Connelly grew up in the small rural town of Tolland\, CT. From a non-musical family\, Nicole\, alongside her twin sister Erin\, started to develop a relationship with music while attending Tolland High School and the Litchfield Jazz Camp. These formative experiences brought long-lasting musical friendships and developed her desire to pursue a musical education and career. \nStarting in 2012\, as a Jazz and Commercial Music Major at Towson University\, Nicole was immersed in the world of improvisation and found refuge in creative music\, the “avant-garde”. With limitless possibilities and a landscape of sounds\, this gave way to finding her distinct voice. \nWhile still in school\, Nicole founded the Creative Music Consortium in March 2016\, now co-curated with Baltimore-based drummer Asher Herzog\, to provide musicians in the surrounding area with a creative musical outlet. Nicole graduated from Towson University in 2016 with a Bachelors degree in Jazz/Commercial Music. After spending a year playing Trombone professionally in Baltimore full-time\, she now resides in New York City where she continues her creative and professional journey.

SUMMARY:Two Rivers Ensemble with special guest Spiral Modes
DESCRIPTION:Join acclaimed trumpeter and composer Amir ElSaffar and his Two Rivers sextet to discover a transcendent space where musical boundaries dissolve. ElSaffar’s sonic tapestries meld Western jazz and Iraqi maqam to create a new sound that’s “hypnotic and utterly unique” (Time Out Chicago). \nAmerican-born ElSaffar learned Iraqi maqam\, a highly sophisticated system of melodic modes in classical Arabic music\, from a master of the tradition — Hamid Al-Saddi\, renowned for his commanding vocals and deep knowledge of the Baghdad repertoire. Al-Saddi will join ElSaffar on stage for a powerful performance between teacher and student. \nOpening the evening are special guests\, Spiral Modes\, a Toronto-based band led by qanun player and composer Sanaz Nakhjavani. The group formed in 2017 at the Museum following a jam session with members of Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble. Spiral Mode’s members originate from Iran\, Syria\, and Greece\, and their musical explorations extend past borders into the greater Middle East and Mediterranean. Rooted in improvisation\, the group creates unique experiences. \nThis show is part of our 2018/19 Performing Arts season\, The Other Side of Fear\, featuring acclaimed artists who have transcended fear through music\, dance\, and spoken word.

Surrounded and inspired by the natural scenery he loved\, Dvorak wrote this mass with a spirit of deep joy and gratitude for Creation and the gift of artistic creativity. In doing so\, he gave us a glorious\, enduring work that reflects his faith and humankind’s relationship with the Creator and the natural world.\nThe concert heats up further with ECC’s inaugural performance of the stirring Missa Gaia/Earth Mass\, a unique musical experience that has been described as “an environmental liturgy of contemporary music”. The title derives from the Latin word Missa (Mass) and the Greek word Gaia (Mother Nature)\, acknowledging the “Gaia hypothesis” that proposes all living matter on Earth could be considered as a single living entity.\nWritten in 1981 by jazz saxophonist Paul Winter and four collaborators\, including Canada’s Paul Halley\, Missa Gaia is the result of his desire to create “a celebration that was both ecumenical and ecological\, one that would embrace all the voices of the Earth”. He set out to produce a mass that would “celebrate the whole earth as a sacred place”. This was achieved by including choir\, vocal soloists\, a seven-piece jazz ensemble\, rhythms and percussion from different cultures and the recorded voices of whales\, loons\, harp seals and wolves in his creation.\nThe four traditional movements of the mass (Kyrie\, Sanctus\, Benedictus and Agnus Dei) are interspersed with musical genres including Brazilian folksong\, folk style ballads\, swinging gospel and Gregorian chant. The animal calls are sometimes used as the melody. In the Kyrie\, for example\, the dulcet sound of a soprano saxophone echoes the haunting four-note call of a female tundra wolf\, which is then taken up by the choir with the words “Kyrie Eleison” – Greek for “Lord\, have mercy”. \nThis rich variety of voices and styles reflects the truth that our Earth is made up of tremendous diversity. The varied musical parts come together powerfully to reflect the greater whole and speak of our interconnectedness with all of Creation.\nMissa Gaia/Earth Mass is a compelling and always relevant work about reclaiming the ancient knowledge of our world as a sacred place – a place worthy of honour\, preservation and protection. \nFollow the Etobicoke Centennial Choir\nFacebook: www.facebook.com/EtobicokeCentennialChoir  Twitter: https://twitter.com/CentennialChoir.

SUMMARY:Best of Big Band Open Mic
DESCRIPTION:The Mississauga Big Band Jazz Ensemble is putting on a very special Big Band Open Mic this year \n  \nThis years’ show is a little different. We decided to pick our favorite singers from \nthe last 7 years and put on a “Best” of show. \n  \n  \nEach singer has “worked out” with the band to get a little more comfortable with the concept of sharing the stage with a conductor and 17 musicians. “It’s a lot different from singing with a smaller group\,” says bandleader Rob Boniface. “If a singer does something unexpected\, they learn in a hurry that 17 people behind them cannot all adjust at once. But even with the learning curve\, I’m really impressed with the talent of the singers who are joining us.” \n  \nThe audience can expect a fun array of different vocal styles\, as the open mic singers tackle everything from soulful blues to fast-driving Sinatra songs. \n  \nWhat:             The “Best” Big Band Open Mic with the    Mississauga Big Band Jazz                        Ensemble \nWhen:            Saturday\, April 6\, 2012 \n7:00 p.m. \nWhere:           Cooksville United Church \n2500 Mimosa Row               Mississauga \nTickets:         $20 per person\, $10 for children and people aged 65 or older \nTo order\, email Rob Boniface or call 905-270-4757 \n  \n  \nContact: Rob Boniface\, Mississauga Big Band Jazz Ensemble\, 905-270-4757\, at rboniface@rogers.com \n  \nwww.mbbje.com

SUMMARY:The John Wayne Swingtet & Bryn Roberts
DESCRIPTION:The John Wayne Swingtet\nThe John Wayne Swingtet is a group of four acoustic jazz musicians (and guest artists) who use the music of Django Reinhardt and The Hot Club of France as an inspirational starting point. From there they branch out into modern jazz\, some country\, a little latin and even vintage television show themes. This mixture is then brought to a boil with a generous helping of swing and a dash of humour\, resulting in a musical smorgasbord which will leave you tapping your toes and smiling with satisfaction. \nBryn Roberts\nBryn Roberts is pianist\, keyboardist and composer who is in demand in a wide variety of musical contexts. \nHe has performed\, toured and recorded extensively both as a leader and sideman\, and is a mainstay at NYC jazz clubs like Smalls\, Mezzrow\, The Jazz Gallery\, the 55 bar and Dizzy’s. An acclaimed composer and bandleader\, Roberts has four albums out featuring his own music: his debut Present Tense\, Ludlow (featuring Seamus Blake\, Drew Gress and Mark Ferber)\, Fables (featuring Seamus Blake\, Orlando le Fleming and Johnathan Blake) and his most recent release\, a duo album with guitarist Lage Lund called Nightsong.
