SUMMARY:TONE: Jason Doell\, New Hermitage\, meimei
DESCRIPTION:On June 18 at Array Space TONE features noted local experimentalist Jason Doell as he launches his album Becoming In Shadows ~ Of Being Touched (White Sepulchre). Doell shares the culmination of a multi-year process of gathering and resituating recordings of piano sounds through his very own algorithmic compositional tool. The interplay between Doell (piano) and the generative sampled material offers a labyrinthine journey through sonic spaces. The event includes east coast improvising ensemble New Hermitage (Andrew MacKelvie\, India Gailey\, Ross Burns\, and Ellen Gibling) who play with expectations through “fragile\, gauzy chamber sound\,” which “sigh\, arch\, and shimmer in meticulously pitched blends that soothe as much as they stammer” (Quietus). The duo of vocalist Amirtha Kidambi and pianist Ananya Ganesh sonically realizes the concept of embodied becoming\, through unfurling emergent forms. \n$12 Adv / $15 Door\, All Ages

SUMMARY:TONE: Zoh Amba & Chris Corsano\, Farida Amadou\, Ways
DESCRIPTION:On June 21 TONE unlocks reactive potential at the Tranzac with Zoh Amba (saxophone) and Chris Corsano (percussion). Each artist brings a prodigious world of sound to their improvising practice\, capable of blistering roars\, transcendent oases\, and worlds in between. Brussels-based Farida Amadou brings her transformative bass playing that takes turbulent crushed tones and renders them familiar and nuanced. The rhythmic agility of Ways (Brodie West\, and Evan Cartwright)\, described by the Wire as “…deeply thoughtful and absorbing\,” add to the evening with their refined sound-weaving\, bringing an uncanny mutualism to their reeds and drums. \n$15 Adv / $20 Door\, All Ages

SUMMARY:TONE: White People Killed Them
DESCRIPTION:The final week of the TONE festival begins June 24 at the Tranzac with the highly anticipated Toronto performance of White People Killed Them—a collaboration between Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and sound artist Raven Chacon\, John Dieterich of Deerhoof\, and percussionist and installation artist Marshall Trammell. The provocative name calls on the subjectivity of the listener\, asserting a polemical sound that roils\, resists\, or resolves with each individual. The trio create sonic declarations with total abandon\, as vaulting electronics are buffeted by scorched guitar and propulsive drumwork. The evening includes two local acts with Not A Band bringing crunchy new wave treats\, and Animatist offering polyrhythmic experimental rock formulations. \n$15 Adv / $20 Door\, All Ages

SUMMARY:TONE: Sun Ra Arkestra\, Tender Buttons
DESCRIPTION:TONE concludes on June 28 at the Great Hall as part of the interplanetary journey of the Sun Ra Arkestra. The Arkestra builds on an omnipotent lineage that infuses their big band sound described as “congregations of spontaneous harmony” (The Guardian). Maestro Marshall Allen\, who joined the Arkestra in 1960\, connects the current ensemble members to founder Sun Ra. While unable to tour with the group\, Allen helps to extrapolate Sun Ra’s spiritual and sonic trajectories that give rise to their revelatory performances. \nTickets: $40 Adv / $50 Door

SUMMARY:Along the Way: solo exhibition by Susan Garrington @ Niagara Pumphouse
DESCRIPTION:Niagara Pumphouse Arts Centre is excited to reveal a new exhibition next month titled ALONG THE WAY\, showcasing Susan Garrington’s captivating collection of paintings inspired by the ordinary locations the artist encountered in her journeys. The solo exhibition will be held in the Joyner Gallery from June 28 to July 30\, with an opening reception on July 2 from 2:00 -4:00 p.m.\nIn her latest body of work\, the watercolourist explores the theme of finding joy and wonder in the seemingly mundane aspects of our everyday lives. Taking inspiration from her childhood experiences\, her father’s stories about the things he noticed outdoors and her mother’s love for gardening shaped her keen observation skills and deep appreciation for colour and design.
