SUMMARY:Live to Air with Amanda Martinez
DESCRIPTION:Amanda Martinez has a new album coming out this summer\, and you could be one of the first people to hear it. \nThe Canadian singer-songwriter will play a Live to Air concert for an exclusive audience at the Long & McQuade Performance Hall on Thursday\, June 13. That’s a week before the release of the new record\, Libre — and Martinez will have a sneak preview for jazz.fm91 donors who sign up. \nWith Libre\, Martinez takes stock of her place as an artist\, friend\, daughter and mom with a rich\, lived-in mix of African and Latin-American rhythms and musical styles. \nThe lineup for this concert: \n\nAmanda Martinez – vocals\nKevin Laliberte – guitar\nDrew Birston – bass\nRosendo “Chendy ” Leon – percussion\nAlexander Brown – trumpet\nDonne Roberts – guitar/vocals\n\nProduced by Juno Award-nominated Kevin Laliberte\, Libre is Martinez’s most musically eclectic recording yet. She called on an impressive group of collaborators\, including artists such as Cuban-born\, Miami-based singer-songwriter Elsten Torres\, Canadian jazz singer Kellylee Evans\, Malagasy guitarist and singer Donne Roberts and Sudanese multi-instrumentalist Waleed Abdulahmid. She is backed by her band of the past 15 years\, with Laliberte on guitar\, Alexander Brown on trumpet and flugelhorn\, Osvaldo Rodriguez on violin\, Drew Birston on bass and Rosendo “Chendy” Leon on percussion. \n“My initial idea was to create an album with influences from Africa\, where my mother is from\,” Martinez explains. “But as I worked on it\, and different people came into my life\, the concept evolved\, and I realized I wanted the freedom to include songwriters from other places and from different genres. That led to the idea of Libre — free. It involved taking risks because it’s different from what I have done before … But if you are creating an album called Libre\, free\, you have to take chances.” \nThursday\, June 13 from 7 to 8 pm \nOur thank-you gift for your donation of $150 for one seat or $300 for a pair. A full tax receipt will be issued in February\, 2020. \nClick here to donate

SUMMARY:JUNE GARBER AND STU MAC Live at Jazz Bistro
DESCRIPTION:STU MAC is a dynamic performer whose charisma and charm delight audiences at every turn. His smooth tone and signature phrasing create a sound that you won’t soon forget. \nWith a vocal style reminiscent of Sinatra\, Tormé or Baker\, Stu Mac brings to life the phrasing and tone with which the ‘Great American Songbook’ was meant to be sung. Stu is a dynamic performer who continues to play a variety of venues throughout Toronto and southern Ontario. \nAfter receiving the ‘jazz vocalist of the year’ award while attending Humber College in 1998\, Stu went on to record and release his debut album ‘In a moment’ in 2000. He has studied with jazz notables\, such as Raneé Lee\, and performed with a number of Canada’s jazz luminaries\, including his Humber contemporary\, Laila Biali. Stu is set to release his latest project ‘Out of the Blue’ this summer and is excited to bring his band and new material to the Niagara Jazz Festival. \nJUNE GARBER is one of Canada’s most accomplished jazz vocalists. Her luscious\, masterful interpretive skills and on-stage personality capture audiences and draw them in\, enveloped by her warmth and sheer joy at being on stage. Every song that she chooses to sing connects to a base truth within – so there is never any artifice. Her voice reflects each emotional shift that the writer intended\, whether swinging with an up-tempo jazz song or telling a story with a soulful ballad. The stagecraft she learned in her earlier career as an actor is still evident in her singing performances today. \n“Of course that’s the miracle of June Garber; her instinct for capturing and delivering the details of a story and the nuances of emotions – the combination of sensuous luxury\, effortless precision\, characterful interpretation and the warmth of empathy.” – Raul DaGama \nJune has toured and performed as a singer in major venues across Canada and the United States\, Cuba\, the Caribbean\, Mexico\, South Africa\, and Australia. She has performed at jazz festivals throughout North America and with big bands in Toronto and Sarasota\, Florida. Her latest album This I Knowweaves a tapestry of emotions – love\, joy\, pain\, sadness – presented in some wonderful jazz songs that are not often recorded. It continues to receive to receive rave reviews and extensive airplay around the world.

Soon after the show began\, pouring rain and heavy wind threatened to put an end to the show\, but she pushed on for much of the set\, urging the drenched crowd to remain calm and stay with her. Eventually the storm put an end to the performance\, but not before she promised her fans that she would return the next day. True to her word\, she performed the entire concert again on July 22nd for the people of New York City. \nHer love for life\, her never-ending wonder\, her appreciation of goals and achievements and her sheer human spirit define the icon that is Diana Ross.

SUMMARY:ADI BRAUN SINGS DORIS DAY Live at Jazz Bistro
DESCRIPTION:ONE NIGHT ONLY! Join Adi Braun as she takes you on a Sentimental Journey through the musical life of the quintessential “girl next door”\, Doris Day! Adi brings her signature vocals to such Day classics as “Secret Love”\, “Pillow Talk and “It’s Magic”.\nBacked by Tom King\, piano\, Jordan O’Connor\, bass\, and Daniel Barnes\, drums\, this is a “mustn’t miss” evening of Doris Day’s swinging hits\, toe-tapping classics and luscious ballads. Hop on the “Deadwood Stage” as Adi takes you down Doris Day memory lane. \nAdi Braun’s sophisticated style and subtle delivery evokes such vocal greats as Sarah Vaughan\, Lotte Lenya\, Judy Garland and Rosemary Clooney. Elizabeth Ahlfors of New York’s Cabaret Scenes describes Adi as\, “A tad Dinah Washington\, a hint of Lena Horne\, the enveloping warmth of Doris Day\, all gift-wrapped up in a unique sound that is singular Adi Braun!” Adi’s repertoire ranges from the Great American Songbook\, to European cabaret\, to contemporary songs by Canada legend’s Shirley Eikhard and Gordon Lightfoot as well as her own originals. Whether she is singing in English\, French\, Spanish or German\, Adi Braun is “a power-frau who gives jazz standards a unique touch\, telling stories that are miniature life moments” (Rheinische Post\, Düsseldorf\, Germany). \nBorn in Toronto\, Adi Braun grew up in Europe surrounded by music and musicians. Her parents were opera singers\, and her father\, Victor Braun\, was one of Canada’s leading baritones. Her first instrument was piano\, which she began studying at the age of six. With no formal voice lessons\, she made her first pop/jazz recording at age 19. Following family tradition\, Adi trained classically at the Royal Conservatory of Music and the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Music. She began her singing career as a classical recitalist\, a soloist with orchestra and on-stage in operas and operettas alongside her brother\, baritone Russell Braun. In addition to her many musical roles\, Adi teaches German art song at the Royal Conservatory of Music and is a German diction coach for the Canadian Opera Company. \nAdi started “singing sideways” in the late ‘90s and returned to the music she loves – which she calls “cabarazz” – drawing on aspects from both cabaret and jazz. After winning a local competition in 2001\, she was catapulted to centre-stage as one of Canada’s leading jazz vocalists. In 2007\, Adi was nominated as Best Major Jazz Vocalist of the Year by the Manhattan Association of Cabarets and Clubs (MAC).

SUMMARY:Omara Portuondo at TD Toronto Jazz Festival
DESCRIPTION:Buena Vista Social Club™ Diva celebrates her music and life with a special tour accompanied by special guests \nWhile other much loved Buena Vista stars like Ruben Gonzalez and Ibrahim Ferrer were lured out of retirement. Omara has been continually performing in public since the age 15\, a legendary singer whose voice reflects a long\, creative life of passion and music. She has been singing professionally for an incredible 70 years\, and while revolutions and wars shook the globe\, she has carried on\, with indomitable elegance. \nThe best way to celebrate Omara’s musical career? A very special worldwide tour which will include some exceptional invited guests. The great Cuban diva and artistic ambassador of her country wants to celebrate with a grand fiesta which represents the impressive sweep of her career – on every stop meeting with old friends and new to perform together much loved Cuban classics from ‘Besame Mucho’ to ‘Veinte Años’. The tour will reflect different aspects of her long career\, taking it way back to her younger years and her continuing love of elegant cabaret\, from the Buena Vista days right up to the present with different tastes and flavours\, of what will be a musical feast\, full of piquant sabrosura. \nProducer Ry Cooder said about the Buena Vista Social Club musicians\, that he was lucky\, as we all are to “have caught the tail end of a comet” of a great music culture that was cut off for decades. \nOmara Portuondo is a diva in the best sense\, an ambassador of Cuba to the world. Now in her mid-eighties\, there is a sense in which the curtains of an era are slowly\, elegantly coming down. But she will forever\, as the old show business adage has it “Always leave them wanting more.”
