DESCRIPTION:Michelle Berting Brett returns to Toronto to celebrate the release of her latest album\, Jazz\, Torch & Ancient Pop. It’s an eclectic mix of songs from Berting Brett’s expansive career in pop\, jazz\, and musical theatre. \nThe twelve songs on the album range from musical theatre classics and jazz standards like “If I Were a Bell” from Guys and Dolls and “Just in Time” from Bells Are Ringing to the Gershwins’ timeless “They Can’t Take That Away From Me” and Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer’s immortal “Moon River.” She mixes up the collection with the pop hit theme song from the 1967 film\, “To Sir with Love\,” imbuing it with a Latin arrangement\, the jazz standard “Skylark\,” and even the Carpenters’ “Close to You” with a new\, jazzy arrangement. \nThe concert will feature the songs from the album as well as audience favourites from Michelle’s career. \nThe album will be available for purchase in CD or digital format at MichelleBertingBrett.com as of Nov. 3/23. Using the banner as a visual score\, master musicians Adam Rudolph\, Ralph Miles Jones\, and Alexis Marcelo will share deep insights into the creative process Lateef called autophysiopsychic — music coming from the mental\, physical\, and spiritual self. \nPresented in seven movements\, Night in the Garden will lead you through the imagined garden\, stopping along the way to reflect on the radiance of love. Prototypical sounds of spontaneous composition will be heard as the musicians dialogue with one another\, responding to the feelings that radiate from the audience. Performing as the fourth member of the quartet\, Dawood will blend sound and colour to create a truly multisensory experience. \nFollowing the event\, the banner painted by Shezad Dawood and a recording of the performance will be displayed in the exhibition at a later date.

DESCRIPTION:From Mark Kelso\, creator of The Elvis Goes Jazz Project:  \nIn February of 2022\, Oliver Vadas (Organizer of the West End Jazz Festival) contacted me regarding playing drums for a project of classic Elvis Presley tunes done in a jazz format. Being an Elvis fan myself\, I was intrigued by this possibility. The original arranger had to suddenly remove himself from the project due to a family emergency\, so I ended up taking on the arranging duties myself. For the first performance I was able to put together 18 classic Elvis tunes\, spanning the 1950’s to the 1970’s\, using the big band styles of Frank Sinatra\, some New Orleans grooves\, and Afro-Cuban rhythms. What an interesting mix! For me\, the main focus was to change the songs in a way that would make them interesting to a jazz listener (and the musicians playing) but without being disrespectful to the original songs and melodies.
