SUMMARY:JUNE GARBER AND STU MAC Live at Jazz Bistro
DESCRIPTION:STU MAC is a dynamic performer whose charisma and charm delight audiences at every turn. His smooth tone and signature phrasing create a sound that you won’t soon forget. \nWith a vocal style reminiscent of Sinatra\, Tormé or Baker\, Stu Mac brings to life the phrasing and tone with which the ‘Great American Songbook’ was meant to be sung. Stu is a dynamic performer who continues to play a variety of venues throughout Toronto and southern Ontario. \nAfter receiving the ‘jazz vocalist of the year’ award while attending Humber College in 1998\, Stu went on to record and release his debut album ‘In a moment’ in 2000. He has studied with jazz notables\, such as Raneé Lee\, and performed with a number of Canada’s jazz luminaries\, including his Humber contemporary\, Laila Biali. Stu is set to release his latest project ‘Out of the Blue’ this summer and is excited to bring his band and new material to the Niagara Jazz Festival. \nJUNE GARBER is one of Canada’s most accomplished jazz vocalists. Her luscious\, masterful interpretive skills and on-stage personality capture audiences and draw them in\, enveloped by her warmth and sheer joy at being on stage. Every song that she chooses to sing connects to a base truth within – so there is never any artifice. Her voice reflects each emotional shift that the writer intended\, whether swinging with an up-tempo jazz song or telling a story with a soulful ballad. The stagecraft she learned in her earlier career as an actor is still evident in her singing performances today. \n“Of course that’s the miracle of June Garber; her instinct for capturing and delivering the details of a story and the nuances of emotions – the combination of sensuous luxury\, effortless precision\, characterful interpretation and the warmth of empathy.” – Raul DaGama \nJune has toured and performed as a singer in major venues across Canada and the United States\, Cuba\, the Caribbean\, Mexico\, South Africa\, and Australia. She has performed at jazz festivals throughout North America and with big bands in Toronto and Sarasota\, Florida. Her latest album This I Knowweaves a tapestry of emotions – love\, joy\, pain\, sadness – presented in some wonderful jazz songs that are not often recorded. It continues to receive to receive rave reviews and extensive airplay around the world.

SUMMARY:Live to Air with Amanda Martinez
DESCRIPTION:Amanda Martinez has a new album coming out this summer\, and you could be one of the first people to hear it. \nThe Canadian singer-songwriter will play a Live to Air concert for an exclusive audience at the Long & McQuade Performance Hall on Thursday\, June 13. That’s a week before the release of the new record\, Libre — and Martinez will have a sneak preview for jazz.fm91 donors who sign up. \nWith Libre\, Martinez takes stock of her place as an artist\, friend\, daughter and mom with a rich\, lived-in mix of African and Latin-American rhythms and musical styles. \nThe lineup for this concert: \n\nAmanda Martinez – vocals\nKevin Laliberte – guitar\nDrew Birston – bass\nRosendo “Chendy ” Leon – percussion\nAlexander Brown – trumpet\nDonne Roberts – guitar/vocals\n\nProduced by Juno Award-nominated Kevin Laliberte\, Libre is Martinez’s most musically eclectic recording yet. She called on an impressive group of collaborators\, including artists such as Cuban-born\, Miami-based singer-songwriter Elsten Torres\, Canadian jazz singer Kellylee Evans\, Malagasy guitarist and singer Donne Roberts and Sudanese multi-instrumentalist Waleed Abdulahmid. She is backed by her band of the past 15 years\, with Laliberte on guitar\, Alexander Brown on trumpet and flugelhorn\, Osvaldo Rodriguez on violin\, Drew Birston on bass and Rosendo “Chendy” Leon on percussion. \n“My initial idea was to create an album with influences from Africa\, where my mother is from\,” Martinez explains. “But as I worked on it\, and different people came into my life\, the concept evolved\, and I realized I wanted the freedom to include songwriters from other places and from different genres. That led to the idea of Libre — free. It involved taking risks because it’s different from what I have done before … But if you are creating an album called Libre\, free\, you have to take chances.” \nThursday\, June 13 from 7 to 8 pm \nOur thank-you gift for your donation of $150 for one seat or $300 for a pair. A full tax receipt will be issued in February\, 2020. \nClick here to donate

SUMMARY:JESSICA LALONDE Live at Jazz Bistro
DESCRIPTION:Jessica Lalonde has spent her life exploring music in all its shades and facets. Raised on Country and Rock & Roll\, she fell for jazz during her formative years. Lalonde began singing around her hometown of Midland in small jazz duos and trios\, and for her local Big Band. Eventually the clarity and strength of her voice led her into serious vocal study and she obtained an Honours Bachelor of Music Degree in Performance from Wilfrid Laurier University. She excelled in her studies\, winning a performance scholarship\, several prestigious concerto competitions\, and holding the title roles in the University’s opera productions. A very pivotal moment for Lalonde was when she discovered Billie Holiday. “I literally became obsessed with her and then my musical voyage emerged from there\,” she says. She also immersed herself in the music of other dynamic female artists such as Ella Fitzgerald\, Jo Stafford\, Helen Forrest and Nina Simone. \nAfter graduating she recorded a solo album of jazz and big band hits produced by jazz veteran Bill King. The album Spinning Daydreams\, features some of Canada’s finest and most sought after musicians including Kevin Breit (Norah Jones\, kd lang\, Cassandra Wilson)\, Davide DiRenzo (Jacksoul\, Sophie Milman\, Tomi Swick)\, Duncan Hopkins (Diana Krall\, Mark Murphy\, Rob McConnell and the Boss Brass) and Ann Lindsay (Blue Rodeo\, Dionne Warwick\, The Chieftans). \nFollowing the production and touring of this project\, Lalonde continued to explore and hone her instrument by delving into Bel canto singing under the guidance of Metropolitan soprano Aprile Millo\, and in 2015 she had the privilege of performing in Italy alongside Ms. Millo for a series of concerts benefitting the Museo and Comittato Renata Tebaldi\, the Amici delle case di Puccini\, and Villa Verdi. While there\, she was also honoured to work with legendary Conductor Maestro Richard Bonynge.

SUMMARY:SIMONE MORRIS “BIRTHDAY” TRIO Live at Jazz Bistro
DESCRIPTION:SIMONE MORRIS “BIRTHDAY” TRIO: featuring Adrean Farrugia (piano) and Mike Freedman (guitar) \nAfter 10 years playing the jazz circuit\, vocalist Simone Morris opted to dig deeper into writing with her long-time guitarist Mike Freedman. Her all-original album “Settling Up” (featuring Canadian treasures Adrean Farrugia on piano\, William Sperandei on trumpet and Bill McBirnie on flute) was released November 2018\, debuting at #1 on the iTunes Canada Jazz Chart. Since its release it has received extensive airplay\, accolades\, and in-depth interviews and reviews. \nSimone’s innate musicality was evident at an early age beginning in classical piano at age 6. Realizing young that music was an outlet for expression of emotion\, it became an integral part of who she was as a person. Mature interpretive and technical abilities caught the attention of her teachers and she was deemed an outstanding natural talent. With an array of performance and musical direction experience under her belt from youth\, she went on to graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music from York University\, studying contemporary improvisation with Casey Sokol. She discovered her voice as a member of\, and soloist in\, the University’s Jazz Choir (“Wibijazz’n’”)\, under the direction of Andrew Craig. For Simone\, the sheer joy of singing was so profound that she re-focussed and began a lifelong path as a vocalist. \nKnown for soulful takes on life and love\, she draws on the early influence of Ray Charles\, Etta James\, Aretha Franklin & Joni Mitchell\, alongside her favourite women in jazz – Billie Holliday\, Sarah Vaughan\, Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone. Yet she has carved her own way on the jazz scene with a unique timbre\, a natural sultry allure\, and an honest raw connection to music evident in her every note. She treats her audience to a refreshingly ‘dig-deep’ kind of conversation\, all the while serenading the room in her velvety sweet-vibes.

SUMMARY:STEPHANIE TRICK AND PAOLO ALDERIGHI Live at Jazz Bistro
DESCRIPTION:Stephanie Trick “has come to practically dominate the stride piano field\,” notes reviewer Jack Rummel. Harlem stride piano\, which developed in the 1920s and ’30s\, is an orchestral style of two-handed piano playing that not only swings\, but is also technically demanding and exciting to watch. Louis Mazetier\, a respected interpreter of this genre\, writes in the Bulletin of the Hot Club of France that she has “won the esteem of specialists in the genre with wonderful interpretations of stride classics\, James P. Johnson\, Fats Waller\, and Don Lambert (which she learned by ear). She plays these pieces with a punch that is matched by her precise interpretation.”
