That first Festival established our mandate of featuring the best jazz musicians from Toronto\, across the country and around the world – and Canadian jazz treasure Jane Bunnett was there. Jane played the first ever Toronto Jazz Festival and since then has remained a Festival regular\, showcasing her substantial and varied body of work.

Lorne Lofsky is one of Canada’s best – an internationally acclaimed guitarist\, for three years he was a regular member of the Oscar Peterson Quartet\, while being a first call guitarist for visiting artists like Chet Baker\, Joey DeFrancesco\, Ray Brown and Dave Holland\, among others. Lorne continues to produce outstanding music\, having recently released the first album under his own name in over twenty years.

From the smallest clubs to the biggest stages\, the Festival has provided an outstanding development opportunities for musicians from across the country\, whether just emerging\, or well-established…and each artist brings a unique perspective to their music of what it means to be Canadian. Joe Sealy is a great example – a Canadian jazz legend\, he brought to life the Africville Suite: a groundbreaking work musically\, but also a vital showcase of a difficult period in the Canadian history of race relations – a history which Joe experienced first hand. His performance of the Africville Suite at the 1996 Festival remains one of our most important moments.

We even introduced a young Harry Connick Jr. to Toronto in 1989! Jesse Ryan continues this tradition – winner of the Toronto Arts Foundation Emerging Jazz Artist award in 2020\, he released his debut album the same year and has already made a substantial mark on the Toronto scene with his unique blend of jazz and Caribbean musical traditions.

Elmer Ferrer is one of the local Cuban community’s most exciting players – a fiery guitarist who takes a decidedly contemporary approach to Cuban musical traditions\, earning him a regular spot in the band of Larnell Lewis\, and a 2021 JUNO Award nomination for his own music.

Sammy Jackson may be headed on that same trajectory – her debut album just won the 2021 JUNO Award in the Best Vocal Jazz category – while at the same time representing a line of outstanding vocalists presented by the Festival including Ella Fitzgerald\, Sarah Vaughan\, Dianne Reeves and more.

The Berklee Indian Ensemble boasts musicians and performers from around the world\, blending classical\, folk\, Sufi and contemporary Indian music with influences from hip hop\, jazz\, Middle Eastern and African music to produce a whole new Indian sound. With high-profile collaborations featuring artists like A.R. That’s a week before the release of the new record\, Libre — and Martinez will have a sneak preview for jazz.fm91 donors who sign up. \nWith Libre\, Martinez takes stock of her place as an artist\, friend\, daughter and mom with a rich\, lived-in mix of African and Latin-American rhythms and musical styles. \nThe lineup for this concert: \n\nAmanda Martinez – vocals\nKevin Laliberte – guitar\nDrew Birston – bass\nRosendo “Chendy ” Leon – percussion\nAlexander Brown – trumpet\nDonne Roberts – guitar/vocals\n\nProduced by Juno Award-nominated Kevin Laliberte\, Libre is Martinez’s most musically eclectic recording yet. She called on an impressive group of collaborators\, including artists such as Cuban-born\, Miami-based singer-songwriter Elsten Torres\, Canadian jazz singer Kellylee Evans\, Malagasy guitarist and singer Donne Roberts and Sudanese multi-instrumentalist Waleed Abdulahmid. She is backed by her band of the past 15 years\, with Laliberte on guitar\, Alexander Brown on trumpet and flugelhorn\, Osvaldo Rodriguez on violin\, Drew Birston on bass and Rosendo “Chendy” Leon on percussion. \n“My initial idea was to create an album with influences from Africa\, where my mother is from\,” Martinez explains. “But as I worked on it\, and different people came into my life\, the concept evolved\, and I realized I wanted the freedom to include songwriters from other places and from different genres. That led to the idea of Libre — free. Now\, he’ll be performing an evening of outstanding jazz just for you. \nBob DeAngelis and his band will play a 90-minute Live to Air concert of traditional Dixieland tunes on Thursday\, June 6. It will be broadcast live to the world\, but you could be one of the few people with the privilege of having a seat in the small crowd in the Long & McQuade Music Hall. \nThe lineup: \n\nBob DeAngelis – clarinet and tenor sax\nJohn MacLeod – cornet\nPhil Disera – guitar\nRon Johnston – bass\nDon Vickery – drums\n\nInternationally recognized for his woodwind playing prowess\, DeAngelis’s diverse performing career includes appearances at international jazz festivals from Toronto to Montreux. \nHe was the featured soloist in the hit musical Fosse\, where he recreated Benny Goodman’s legendary performance of Sing\, Sing\, Sing at Carnegie Hall. In January of 2008\, his 50-piece Champagne Symphony staged a triumphant Carnegie Hall concert in New York when they performed his signature The Coronation of a King: A Tribute to Benny Goodman concert in the 70th anniversary celebration of Goodman’s famous 1938 concert. The 2004 launch of his symphonic tribute to Benny Goodman’s musical legacy with the Champagne Symphony Pops Orchestra conducted by John MacLeod introduced DeAngelis’s brilliant clarinet-playing to entirely new audiences.
