SUMMARY:FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre presents Ladysmith Black Mambazo
DESCRIPTION:For 64 years\, South Africa’s five-time Grammy Award winners\, Ladysmith Black Mambazo has warmed the hearts of audiences worldwide with uplifting vocal harmonies\, signature dance moves and charming onstage banter. \nIt was Paul Simon’s 1986 Graceland album that introduced Ladysmith Black Mambazo to the world. The late former South African President Nelson Mandela designated the group “South Africa’s cultural ambassadors to the world\,” a title the members carry with them with the highest honour. In 2018 the group received not one\, but two Grammy Award nominations for two separate albums\, a first in the history of World Music. \nThese two nominations brought their career total to 19 Grammy Award nominations. One of these albums\, Shaka Zulu Revisited\, won Best World Music Album. This was the group’s fifth Grammy Award win\, the most for any World Music group. In 2019\, Ladysmith Black Mambazo collaborated for the third time with the famed Steppenwolf Theatre Company on a production entitled Lindiwe and released an album with songs from the show. \nLadysmith Black Mambazo has performed for millions of people\, singing a message of peace\, love and harmony. \n“It isn’t merely the grace and power of their dancing or the beauty of their singing that rivets the attention\, but the sheer joy and love that emanates from their being.” — Paul Simon

SUMMARY:Mahabharata Part One: Karma: The Life We Inherit
DESCRIPTION:A Why Not Theatre Production presented by Canadian Stage with Why Not Theatre \nCreated and Written by Ravi Jain and Miriam Fernandes\, using poetry from Carole Satyamurti’s Mahabharata: A Modern Retelling \nFrom ancient verse to modern stage\, experience a legend reborn\nMahabharata is a contemporary take on a Sanskrit epic that is more than four thousand years old and foundational to South Asian culture. This gripping story of a family feud is an exploration of profound philosophical and spiritual ideas. A visually stunning spectacle presented in two parts\, Mahabharata takes audiences on a journey through the past in order to write a thrilling new future. \nExploring themes of storytelling\, ecocide\, and dharma (empathy)\, Part 1 begins Mahabharata’s epic journey that asks\, “How can one end the spiral of revenge when everyone believes they are right and their opponents wrong?” \nKing Janamejaya is holding a ritual sacrifice in which he will kill all the snakes in the world to avenge his father’s death. In hopes of ending this cycle of revenge\, a storyteller is summoned to tell King Janamejaya the tale of The Mahabharata. The storyteller tells of the rival Pandava and Kaurava clans\, and the choices that lead to their infamous Game of Dice. Through playful narration\, classical Indian dance\, and a live band\, the ensemble tells the stories of humans struggling to build a just world in the face of competition\, jealousy\, and rage. \nBUY TICKETS

SUMMARY:Mahabharata Part Two: Dharma: The Life We Choose
DESCRIPTION:A Why Not Theatre Production presented by Canadian Stage with Why Not Theatre \nCreated and Written by Ravi Jain and Miriam Fernandes\, using poetry from Carole Satyamurti’s Mahabharata: A Modern Retelling \nA timeless epic\, retold with stunning visuals\, live music\, and bold new storytelling\nContinuing the story from Part 1\, King Janamejaya is told of the war fought by his ancestors – the battle of Kurukshetra and its devastating destruction of the planet\, the mass extinction that follows\, and of the survivors left behind to rebuild. \nIn Mahabharata’s Part 2 (Dharma)\, the storytelling tools evolve into captivating projections\, dynamic digital soundscapes\, and poetic stage design. The stories delve simultaneously into philosophical and political ideas\, and abstract and absolute truths. Interrogating the themes of justice and revenge\, Part 2 includes a 15-minute Sanskrit opera adaptation of the Bhagavad Gita (The Song of God)\, which is the most famous chapter of the Mahabharata epic. \nIn times of division\, how do we find wholeness? Are we destined to repeat the mistakes of our ancestors? Can we build a new world? King Janamejaya is confronted with both the battle of Kurukshetra and the battle inside his own heart. \nBUY TICKETS

SUMMARY:Bravo Niagara! Presents Samara Joy
DESCRIPTION:Presented as part of the Bravo Niagara! TD Jazz Series \nFew figures in jazz history have experienced the kind of success that vocalist Samara Joy has\, especially at such a young age. Still only 25\, she leads a career that can safely be called sensational. \nTo date she’s received five Grammy Awards\, including one for Best New Artist that has given the committed jazz singer the profile of a pop celebrity and made her a steady presence on network TV. With millions of likes on TikTok\, Joy has helped new\, young generations of music fans discover timeless American music. Her performance credits read like a list of the most legendary venues and events in all of jazz and R&B\, among them the Newport\, Monterey and Montreal Jazz Festivals\, the Apollo\, the Village Vanguard and Jazz at Lincoln Center. \nThroughout Joy’s rise\, her press has been glowing\, to say the least. Of Linger Awhile\, her breakout Verve Records debut\, DownBeat commented\, “With this beautiful recording\, a silky-voiced star is born.” The New York Times called her a “silky-voiced rising star\,” while NPR named her a “classic jazz singer from a new generation.” One sold-out concert at a time\, she’s earned a reputation as a masterful interpreter of jazz standards and a rightful heiress of the sound\, technique and charisma that defined her jazz heroines — including Sarah Vaughan\, Betty Carter\, Abbey Lincoln and Carmen McRae. Remarkably\, she didn’t truly immerse herself in the jazz tradition until college.

SUMMARY:Massey Hall Presents Samara Joy
DESCRIPTION:A native of the Bronx\, Samara Joy became entranced by classic R&B as a child and cut her teeth as a singer in her church’s gospel choir. And while her family history is deeply musical—her grandparents helmed the Philadelphia gospel group the Savettes\, and her father\, the musician and songwriter Antonio McLendon\, has produced\, composed\, and arranged his own astounding original work—she didn’t delve into the jazz tradition until college at SUNY Purchase. \nDuring her studies there\, she won the 2019 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition\, which introduced her to the larger jazz scene as a rising star to watch. She was heard\, by audiences and critics alike\, as a masterful interpreter of jazz standards and a rightful heiress of the sound\, technique\, and charisma that defined her jazz heroines—including Vaughan\, Betty Carter\, Abbey Lincoln\, and Carmen McRae. \nJoy released her self-titled debut on the Whirlwind label in 2021\, followed a year later by Linger Awhile\, her breakout Verve debut\, of which DownBeat said\, “With this beautiful recording\, a silky-voiced star is born.” The album earned her a Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album\, in addition to a headline-making win for Best New Artist. A deluxe edition of the album was released\, as well as the EP A Joyful Holiday. \nHer new Verve album\, Portrait\, which Joy co-produced with the veteran trumpeter/bandleader and multi-Grammy winner Brian Lynch\, showcases the intimate\, soulful chemistry she’s developed with her touring band. Portrait also spotlights her burgeoning gifts as a lyricist\, in ingenious arrangements that meld her thoughtful words with music by Charles Mingus\, Sun Ra\, and her late mentor Barry Harris. \nBUY TICKETS
