Gerald Clayton\, Joel Ross\, Immanuel Wilkins\, Kendrick Scott\, and Matt Brewer \n  \nBlue Note Records is the most-respected and longest-running Jazz label in the world. In celebration of their 85th Anniversary\, The Blue Note Quintet honours the label’s rich history and paves the way for the eclectic artists of today’s roster. Six-time Grammy Award nominee Gerald Clayton leads the band as Musical Director and Pianist; “Gerald Clayton is one of the most accomplished\, distinctive and innovative pianists performing today” says Don Was\, the label’s President since 2012. To get a chance to pay tribute and try to carry some of that essence forward is truly just an honor.” \n-Gerald Clayton \nBlue Note Records was founded on January 6\, 1939 when a German-Jewish immigrant and passionate Jazz fan named Alfred Lion produced his first recording session in New York City. SUMMARY:Variations on Goldberg Variations @ Jane Mallett Theatre
DESCRIPTION:J.S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations is one of the most famous works in the Western canon. Our Variations on the Goldberg Variations reflects on Bach’s singular achievement through a contemporary lens. In the first half of the program\, four living Canadian composers each write 7-8 variations for a total of 30 new variations\, each preceded by a rendition of Bach’s original. The composers represent not only a diversity of aesthetics\, but the newly-composed variations will alternate continuously between piano\, harpsichord\, organ and electronic keyboard. J.S. would have loved it! \nIn the second half\, the distinguished Australian composer and pianist Paul Grabowsky returns to Soundstreams nearly a decade after appearing with his boundary-breaking Australian Art Orchestra. This time he creates his own extraordinary\, jazz-inflected response to Bach’s eternally beautiful theme. Performed 36 times across Australia last season\, The Sydney Arts Guide had this to say: “In this improvisation\, jazz gesturing alternated with hand-crossing\, complex filigree. Paul Grabowsky’s playing was effectively reminiscent of Bach’s ecstatic workings in his thirty variations.”

SUMMARY:6 Pianos 12 Hands @ Jane Mallett Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Steve Reich and Terry Riley have each had a profound influence on the way we listen to music. The term “minimalism” is often used to characterize their music\, yet the music itself is anything but minimal; incorporating much nuance and subtlety that is maximal in imagination and innovation. \nReich\, described by the New Yorker as “the most original musical thinker of our time”\, recognized early in his career the power of multiple pianos\, none exploited more spectacularly than in his mesmerizing Six Pianos. This seminal work is combined with Terry Riley’s A Rainbow in Curved Air\, itself dating from the same period as Six Pianos. And we feature a reprise of Ristic’s Soundstreams-commissioned work Vivaldi Variations. \nREPERTOIRE\nSteve Reich – Six Pianos\nJulia Wolfe – My Lips From Speaking\nAndré Ristic – Variations on a Theme by A. Vivaldi\nAna Sokolović – Trois Études\nTerry Riley – A Rainbow in Curved Air \nFEATURED PIANISTS:\nStephanie Chua\nGeoffrey Conquer\nSimon Docking\nYounggun Kim\nMidori Koga\nGregory Oh\nWesley Shen

SUMMARY:Alex Cuba and Raul Midon @ Koerner Hall
DESCRIPTION:A double bill of soul\, jazz\, and Latin pop sounds\, featuring two dazzling singer-songwriters and instrumentalists – the troubadour from Miami and the Cuban songsmith from Smithers\, BC. \nGrammy\, Latin Grammy\, and Juno Award-winning singer-songwriter Alex Cuba’s songs are compelling exchanges that effortlessly groove through soul\, funk\, jazz\, and pop styles. A forward-thinking\, indie-minded artist\, Cuba’s sugarcane-sweet melodies\, pop-soul hooks\, and powerful guitar riffs have garnered him over 20 awards and nominations\, including four Latin Grammys\, two Junos Awards\, three Grammy nominations\, and one Grammy win. “He’s like Marvin Gaye singing soul to a new generation.” (Boston Globe) \nRaul Midón is also a Grammy Award nominated contemporary singer/songwriter whose impassioned acoustic guitar playing – which traverses pop\, jazz\, soul\, urban\, cumbia\, and flamenco – has garnered as much attention as his smooth singing and sophisticated writing. He has worked with countless legends in the industry\, including Bill Withers\, Herbie Hancock\, Sting\, Terence Blanchard\, and Dianne Reeves\, to name a few. “Midón has a beautifully controlled baritone that can express anything from tenderness to passion. SUMMARY:Lizz Wright and Sanah Kadoura @ Koerner Hall
DESCRIPTION:Lauded vocalist Lizz Wright performs new music from her recently released album\, Shadow. Wright is a steward of American music\, bringing brilliant colour and vibrancy to singular original works and compositions by some of the greatest songwriters of our time. Through an inimitable voice that The New York Times touts as “a smooth\, dark alto possessed of qualities you might associate with barrel-aged bourbon or butter-soft leather\,” Wright sings with a soaring reflection of the cultural fabric of America. \nJuno Award nominated Lebanese-Canadian drummer\, composer\, educator\, and producer Sanah Kadoura’s music traverses the modern jazz idiom with hints of neo-soul and a strong musical influence from her motherland of Lebanon. “Kadoura is a dexterous improviser\, with a light\, elastic approach that evokes Tony Williams\, a major influence.” (JazzTimes)

SUMMARY:Toronto Jazz Fest: PRESERVATION HALL JAZZ BAND
DESCRIPTION:Preservation Hall Jazz Band has held the torch of New Orleans music aloft for more than 50 years\, all the while carrying it enthusiastically forward as a reminder that the history they were founded to preserve is a vibrantly living history. \nPHJB marches that tradition forward once again on So It Is\, the septet’s second release featuring all-new original music. The album redefines what New Orleans music means today by tapping into a sonic continuum that stretches back to the city’s Afro-Cuban roots\, through its common ancestry with the Afrobeat of Fela Kuti and the Fire Music of Pharoah Sanders and John Coltrane\, and forward to cutting-edge artists with whom the PHJB have shared festival stages from Coachella to Newport\, including legends like Stevie Wonder\, Elvis Costello and the Grateful Dead and modern giants like My Morning Jacket\, Arcade Fire and the Black Keys.
