His last record\, the critically acclaimed No Filter\, has earned his eighth nomination for a 2018 Juno Award for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year (he has won twice previously). SUMMARY:Storm Large at Koerner Hall
DESCRIPTION:Storm Large\nat Koerner Hall \nMusician\, actor\, playwright\, author\, awesome. Singer Storm Large of Pink Martini and Rock Star: Supernova fame performs her own brand of in-your-face Broadway\, jazz\, and rock-goddess anthems. The New York Times has called her “sensational.” Not for the faint of heart! \nStorm Large has performed in clubs\, with symphony orchestras all over the USA and UK\, with the New York Pops\, and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Popular Song series\, as well as with Liza Minnelli\, Joel Grey\, and the Pasadena Pops. She has also sung with Grammy Award winner k.d. lang\, pianist Kirill Gerstein\, punk rocker John Doe\, singer/songwriter Rufus Wainwright\, and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer George Clinton. Her autobiographical musical memoir\, Crazy Enough\, played to packed houses in Portland\, at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival\, Adelaide Festival in Australia\, and Joe’s Pub in New York. Her memoir\, Crazy Enough\, was released by Simon and Schuster in 2012\, named Oprah’s Book of the Week\, and awarded the Oregon Book Award for Creative Nonfiction. In the fall of 2014\, Storm & Le Bonheur released a record designed to capture sublime and subversive interpretations of the American Songbook. The recording is a collection of tortured and titillating love songs: beautiful\, familiar\, yet twisted … much like the lady herself. \nADULT CONTENT WARNING: Please be advised that this performance contains adult content and explicit language (with humor). We recommend this concert for adults only.

SUMMARY:Dianne Reeves: Christmas Time is Here
DESCRIPTION:DIANNE REEVES is the pre-eminent jazz vocalist in the world. As a result of her breathtaking virtuosity\, improvisational prowess\, and unique jazz and R&B stylings\, Reeves received the Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Performance for three consecutive recordings—a Grammy first in any vocal category. \n\n\nFeatured in George Clooney’s six-time Academy Award nominated “Good Night\, and Good Luck\,” Reeves won her fourth of five Best Jazz Vocal Grammys for film’s soundtrack. \nReeves has recorded and performed with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. She has also recorded with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted by Daniel Barenboim and was a featured soloist with Sir Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic. Reeves was the first Creative Chair for Jazz for the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the first singer to ever perform at the famed Walt Disney Concert Hall. \nReeves worked with legendary producer Arif Mardin (Norah Jones\, Aretha Franklin) on the Grammy winning A Little Moonlight\, an intimate collection of standards featuring her touring trio. When Reeves’ holiday collection Christmas Time is Here was released\, Ben Ratliff of The New York Times raved\, “Ms. Reeves\, a jazz singer of frequently astonishing skill\, takes the assignment seriously; this is one of the best jazz Christmas CD’s I’ve heard.” \nIn recent years Reeves has toured the world in a variety of contexts including a program entitled “Sing the Truth\,” a musical celebration of Nina Simone which also featured Liz Wright and Angelique Kidjo. She performed at the White House on multiple occasions including President Obama’s State Dinner for the President of China as well as the Governors’ Ball. \nReeves’ latest release\, Beautiful Life\, won the 2015 Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album. Her first album in five years\, Beautiful Life was produced by Terri Lyne Carrington and features Gregory Porter\, Robert Glasper\, Lalah Hathaway\, and Esperanza Spalding. In January 2015 Reeves joined Paul Simon\, James Taylor and Bobby McFerrin in a tribute to Michael Brecker at Jazz at Lincoln Center.

SUMMARY:Etienne Charles – Carnival: The Sound of a People
DESCRIPTION:During Carnival\, the island of Trinidad becomes engulfed in a cacophony of sounds – from singing minstrels\, to the clash of stick fights\, and lively calypso music with its hallmark steel pan cadences.\n\n\nAs a Trinidadian raised in a musical family\, trumpeter Etienne Charles feels a deep connection to the Carnival traditions. At a young age he joined his father’s steel band\, performing at Carnival fetes\, and immersing himself in the folklore. He returns to his roots to celebrate the traditions that best exemplify Trinidadian culture. Inspired by the noises heard throughout the festivities\, Etienne’s Carnival: The Sound of a People brings the celebrations to the stage. \nHailed by The New York Times as “an auteur” and by JazzTimes as “a daring improviser who delivers with heart wrenching lyricism\,” NPR’s All Things Considered calls Etienne\, “a great young trumpeter…his records filter calypso\, reggae and other Afro-Caribbean music into a modern jazz conception.” Critics and audiences alike continue to praise the Trinidadian’s exciting performances\, thrilling compositions\, and his charismatic onstage presence.

SUMMARY:The Message at Tarragon Theatre
DESCRIPTION:The Message\nby Jason Sherman\ndirected by Richard Rose \n\nNov 7 – Dec 16\, 2018 in the Mainspace \n\nA new play from Governor General’s Literary Award winner for Drama. \n“Whatcha doin’\, Marshall McLuhan?” That’s what the world wanted to know back in the 1960s\, when Canada’s internationally renowned professor-turned-prophet started to sound the alarm on the effects of technology on the human body and spirit. But after a lifetime of warning us all about the hazards of modern life\, McLuhan suffered a stroke that robbed him of his ability to speak. What it couldn’t do\, though\, was stop this deeply religious man from trying to finish his magnum opus: a last desperate attempt to save our souls — and his own.

SUMMARY:Amanda Martinez and Kellylee Evans at Koerner Hall
DESCRIPTION:This double bill of extraordinary musicians and close friends is an evening of warm flavourful jazz\, Latin rhythms\, roots\, and soul. \nAmanda Martinez’s music exultingly blends her unique Mexican and South African roots with flamenco soul. Her third and latest CD\, Mañana\, and her previous solo albums have earned her three Latin Jazz Artist of the Year nominations at Canada’s National Jazz Awards\, and her songs have appeared on three Putumayo world music collections. The singer has headlined at the legendary Blue Note jazz club in New York\, the 2010 FIFA World Cup Festivities in South Africa\, the 2011 PanAmerican Games in Guadalajara\, and the 2015 Toronto Pan Am Games. \nWith six albums\, Juno Award winner Kellylee Evans is still shaking it up. Praised by the Latin Jazz Network for a “gorgeous voice (that) rises to the heavens in rapturous wonder as if in consanguinity with a chorus of angels” and by the Yukon Arts Centre for “a stunning crystalline voice\, both powerful and emotive\,” Evans now pushes her muse firmly into the soulful pop territory.

SUMMARY:Jamey Haddad and Cyra Baptista at Koerner Hall
DESCRIPTION:Two of the world’s greatest percussionists are joined by stellar improvisors in this double-bill of global music. \nJamey Haddad met saxophone player Billy Drewes when both were music students in Boston. Nearly 45 years later\, the longtime friends recorded nine tunes written by Drewes and performed by Under One Sun\, eight musicians who represent five countries and whose ages span five decades. “As my musical journey led me from one continent to another\, and as I experienced a planet crying out for understanding\, this team of players cosmically came forward\,” says Haddad\, a longtime professor of advanced improvisation and percussion at Oberlin Conservatory. “The sheer joy of every member experiencing their bandmates’ artistry truly exemplifies the human capacity to celebrate what makes us unique.” \nBaptista’s program pays tribute to Brasil’s great composer\, Heitor Villa-Lobos. “Baptista has a assembled a group both light on its feet and capable of negotiating the trickiest of rhythmic passages and deliriously romantic melodies with wit\, enthusiasm\, and grace. Highly recommended.” (AllMusic)
