SUMMARY:JESSICA LALONDE Live at Jazz Bistro
DESCRIPTION:Jessica Lalonde has spent her life exploring music in all its shades and facets. Raised on Country and Rock & Roll\, she fell for jazz during her formative years. Lalonde began singing around her hometown of Midland in small jazz duos and trios\, and for her local Big Band. Eventually the clarity and strength of her voice led her into serious vocal study and she obtained an Honours Bachelor of Music Degree in Performance from Wilfrid Laurier University. She excelled in her studies\, winning a performance scholarship\, several prestigious concerto competitions\, and holding the title roles in the University’s opera productions. A very pivotal moment for Lalonde was when she discovered Billie Holiday. “I literally became obsessed with her and then my musical voyage emerged from there\,” she says. She also immersed herself in the music of other dynamic female artists such as Ella Fitzgerald\, Jo Stafford\, Helen Forrest and Nina Simone. \nAfter graduating she recorded a solo album of jazz and big ­band hits produced by jazz veteran Bill King. The album Spinning Daydreams\, features some of Canada’s finest and most sought after musicians including Kevin Breit (Norah Jones\, kd lang\, Cassandra Wilson)\, Davide DiRenzo (Jacksoul\, Sophie Milman\, Tomi Swick)\, Duncan Hopkins (Diana Krall\, Mark Murphy\, Rob McConnell and the Boss Brass) and Ann Lindsay (Blue Rodeo\, Dionne Warwick\, The Chieftans). \nFollowing the production and touring of this project\, Lalonde continued to explore and hone her instrument by delving into Bel canto singing under the guidance of Metropolitan soprano Aprile Millo\, and in 2015 she had the privilege of performing in Italy alongside Ms. Millo for a series of concerts benefitting the Museo and Comittato Renata Tebaldi\, the Amici delle case di Puccini\, and Villa Verdi. While there\, she was also honoured to work with legendary Conductor Maestro Richard Bonynge.

DESCRIPTION:SIMONE MORRIS “BIRTHDAY” TRIO: featuring Adrean Farrugia (piano) and Mike Freedman (guitar) \nAfter 10 years playing the jazz circuit\, vocalist Simone Morris opted to dig deeper into writing with her long-time guitarist Mike Freedman. Her all-original album “Settling Up” (featuring Canadian treasures Adrean Farrugia on piano\, William Sperandei on trumpet and Bill McBirnie on flute) was released November 2018\, debuting at #1 on the iTunes Canada Jazz Chart. Since its release it has received extensive airplay\, accolades\, and in-depth interviews and reviews. \nSimone’s innate musicality was evident at an early age beginning in classical piano at age 6. Realizing young that music was an outlet for expression of emotion\, it became an integral part of who she was as a person. Mature interpretive and technical abilities caught the attention of her teachers and she was deemed an outstanding natural talent. With an array of performance and musical direction experience under her belt from youth\, she went on to graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music from York University\, studying contemporary improvisation with Casey Sokol. She discovered her voice as a member of\, and soloist in\, the University’s Jazz Choir (“Wibijazz’n’”)\, under the direction of Andrew Craig. For Simone\, the sheer joy of singing was so profound that she re-focussed and began a lifelong path as a vocalist. \nKnown for soulful takes on life and love\, she draws on the early influence of Ray Charles\, Etta James\, Aretha Franklin & Joni Mitchell\, alongside her favourite women in jazz – Billie Holliday\, Sarah Vaughan\, Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone. Yet she has carved her own way on the jazz scene with a unique timbre\, a natural sultry allure\, and an honest raw connection to music evident in her every note. She treats her audience to a refreshingly ‘dig-deep’ kind of conversation\, all the while serenading the room in her velvety sweet-vibes.

DESCRIPTION:Brazilian singer Fernanda Cunha (based in Rio de janeiro)\, has been a regular performer in Canada since 2005. She has performed coast-to-coast-to-coast: from Vancouver Island and the Vancouver International Jazz Festival (several years)\, to the Alianait Arts Festival in Nunavut and Jazz Yukon series; from the Edmonton International Jazz Festival to the University of Toronto and other venues. She also has presented clinics/workshops at Mohawk College in Hamilton(Ontario) with Pat Collins trio and at Camthra Secondary School in Mississauga(Ontario)\, and a 1 week residency performing concerts at long-term care facilities as well as in local schools(kindergarten through secondary) in Qualicum Beach(BC) as part of the Harvest of Music Festival. \nIn 2009\, she explored the musical affinities between Canada and Brazil with her fourth album\, appropriately entitled “Brasil Canada” featuring songwriters and musicians from both countries. It’s no secret that\, although Brazil is Fernanda’s homeland and she performs at jazz festivals all over the world\, Canada is her heart´s country. \nFernanda has toured in the most important jazz festivals in the world such as Wien Jazz (Austria)\, Jazz a Juan (France)\, Jazz al fin (Argentina)\, Borneo Jazz (Malaysia)\, among others. She is also member of the Latin Grammy awards since 2007 and she takes part of the Brazilian board held in Miami once a year. \nIn 2017 she recorded her 7th album of career\, “Jobim 90” dedicated to the most important Brazilian songwriter: Antonio Carlos Jobim. Jobim (who would be 90 in 2017) left hundreds of wonderful tunes but Fernanda has chosen to record the songs he wrote melody and lyrics. Repertoire includes “waters of march”\, “samba do avião”\, “triste”\, “chovendo na roseira” and others less recorded like “Angela”\, “Passarim”\, “Ana Luiza” and the unique “Two kites”(written in English by Jobim) and here with arrangement of the Toronto guitarist Reg Schwager. \nIn 2018 Fernanda produced the CD of the composer Sueli Costa\, that was a live recording with her on some vocals plus another singer\, Aurea Martins \nIn 2019 Fernanda is releasing the CD “Fernanda Cunha canta Filó Machado”. Filó is a unique brazilian songwriter with a colourful repertoire. Fernanda features her band including Ze Carlos\, on guitar\, Camilla Dias on piano\, Berval Moraes no bass\, helbe Machado on drums and Reg Schwager.

Pedrito’s musical training came directly from the streets of the Cayo Hueso neighborhood of Old Havana in which he was raised and he has subsequently performed with artists such as Sting\, Paul Simon\, and Wynton Marsalis. \nTogether\, these two master musicians take listeners on a unique and exciting journey.

Festival of the Arts presents Nat Cole: A King’s Centennial with Paul Marinaro and the Ben Paterson Trio\nNathaniel Adams Cole was born in the southern United States (Montgomery\, Alabama) in 1919. From dropping out of high school in 1934 to pursue his love for music full time\, to being a champion of the Civil Rights Movement\, Nat “King” Cole will forever be remembered as one of the most celebrated and cherished jazz pianists and vocalists that we will ever see. To celebrate his centennial in 2019\, Céline Peterson (daughter of legendary jazz pianist Oscar Peterson) has brought together four dynamic artists to present a unique tribute in honor of Nat’s life and career. Led by vocalist Paul Marinaro\, this show delves into the repertoire of Cole’s that many have yet to discover. \nCole’s classic versions of songs we all know and love are the perfect hybrid of simple and intricate. His ability to make his execution of every performance seem almost effortless\, is what makes the planning of the ideal tribute to him even more challenging. There are certain complexities that his music requires that only select vocalists will be able to properly deliver in such a way that both captures the classic sound everyone wants to hear\, while ensuring that their own musical styles come through as well. Marinaro’s velvety baritone and lush intricacies have been wowing audiences in Chicago for over fifteen years. Says Scott Yanow of LA Jazz Scene; “Marinaro takes his place among the top five male jazz singers active today.” \nNat “King” Cole established himself first and foremost as a pianist. His “King Cole Trio” was a source of inspiration for many jazz players that followed\, including the man holding the piano chair for this show\, Philadelphia native Ben Paterson. Paterson’s swinging interpretations of tunes easily recognizable from Cole’s repertoire as well as that of Ray Charles\, Oscar Peterson\, Stevie Wonder\, have guided Ben along the path of solidifying himself as one of the top pianists currently working on the New York jazz scene. One of the greatest challenges that an artist in the jazz genre faces is ensuring that their own style takes centre stage while performing songs that many have heard (and that some would consider previously perfected). There are many layers to Ben’s talent\, but his rhythmic sensibility and impeccable time are the two that made him the first choice for this particular musical task. Downbeat Magazine says Paterson is “As soulful a pianist/organist as exists anywhere.” \nThe many firsts that Cole’s career saw for him were more than just the firsts for one man – they were the firsts for an entire race of human beings. In 1956\, NBC gave Nat his own television variety show\, which would make him the first Black man to host a show of that kind. The same year\, Cole was performing in his home state of Alabama\, when he was attacked on-stage by not one\, not two\, but six white men. The planned attack caused Cole to cancel the shows that were to follow and also left him with a back injury. At this time\, Nat was one of the highest-paid and most successful working men not just in the United States\, but globally. However during this period of deep racial tension and what (at that time) was considered to be one of the most violent times in the US\, to many he was just another colored-man taking a spot away from a white man. Through multiple run-ins with the Ku Klux Klan\, attacks\, tainted career opportunities\, and just about every obstacle you could face in the 1950s and 1960s as a person of color\, Nat still managed to not only continue performing\, but doing it better than almost anyone else to this day. \nWhile there are many wonderful tributes to Nat’s music that have taken place\, Nat Cole: A King’s Centennial honors the entire legacy of a man who spent his entire career defying odds and paving the way for countless musicians since him to be able to sing their songs in a world where they are not defined by the color of their skin\, but by the way in which they choose to utilize their talents. The excellence that Nat “King” Cole demonstrated on a daily basis lives within the hearts and souls of the musicians taking the stage for this show\, and it is a privilege to be able to share the music with those who want to listen.

Al-Saddi will join ElSaffar on stage for a powerful performance between teacher and student. \nOpening the evening are special guests\, Spiral Modes\, a Toronto-based band led by qanun player and composer Sanaz Nakhjavani. The group formed in 2017 at the Museum following a jam session with members of Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble. Spiral Mode’s members originate from Iran\, Syria\, and Greece\, and their musical explorations extend past borders into the greater Middle East and Mediterranean.
