SUMMARY:Cécile McLorin Salvant at TD Toronto Jazz Festival
DESCRIPTION:Cécile McLorin Salvant\nGrammy Award-winning vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant has had a remarkable rise to stardom in her professional career\, and she’s taking another big leap forward with Dreams and Daggers\, her third album for Mack Avenue Records. \nMcLorin Salvant first made waves in the jazz world when\, at the urging of her mother\, she entered the most prestigious jazz vocal competition in the world. Having nearly missed the submission deadline\, she made it to the finals as their youngest performer and was selected by an illustrious panel of judges – Dee Dee Bridgewater\, Dianne Reeves\, Kurt Elling\, Patti Austin\, and Al Jarreau – as the 2010 Thelonious Monk Competition winner. While she had bypassed the traditional U.S. conservatories and jazz schools\, McLorin Salvant studied at France’s Aix-en-Provence before returning for the competition’s semi-finals\, the judges noted her remarkable voice and striking ability to inhabit the emotional space of every song she heard and turn it into a compelling statement. \nIn 2013\, McLorin Salvant made her Mack Avenue Records debut with WomanChild\, garnering a GRAMMY® Award-nomination\, NPR Music’s pick for “Best Jazz Vocal Album of the Year\,” and three placements in DownBeat’s critic’s poll as “Jazz Album of the Year\,” “Top Female Vocalist\,” and “Best Female Jazz Up and Coming Artist of the Year\,” among many other accolades. Her 2015 follow up release\, For One To Love\, won the GRAMMY® Award for “Best Jazz Vocal Album.” \nMcLorin Salvant’s music has been featured in multiple Chanel “Chance” campaigns and is included in the soundtrack for HBO’s acclaimed film\, Bessie. New York Times Magazine included her recording of “Trolley Song” as one of “25 Songs That Tell Us Where Music Is Going\,” The New Yorker profiled her at age 27\, Vanity Fair featured her in their “Millennials That Are Shaking Up The Jazz World” piece\, Essence Magazine noted her as one of “13 Emerging Black Women in Music\,” and Gilles Peterson included her as an “Artist to Watch” in The Atlantic. Learn more about McLorin Salvant on NPR’s “All Things Considered” and “Fresh Air\,” New York Times’ “Close at Hand\,” or watch her perform on BBC’s “Later… with Jools Holland” and PBS’ “The Tavis Smiley Show.” \nSullivan Fortner\nLauded as one of the top jazz pianists of his generation\, Sullivan Fortner is recognized for his virtuosic technique and captivating performances. The winner of three prestigious awards – a Leonore Annenberg Arts Fellowship\, the 2015 Cole Porter Fellowship from the American Pianists Association\, and the 2016 Lincoln Center Award for Emerging Artists – Sullivan’s music embodies the essence of the blues and jazz as he connects music of all eras and genres through his improvisation.

SUMMARY:JUDITH LANDER Live at Jazz Bistro
DESCRIPTION:Judith Lander is a consummate interpreter of cabaret’s finest offerings. Her repertoire ranges from pop to Broadway\, with the likes of Stephen Sondheim\, to classical cabaret including Kurt Weil and Jacques Brel\, with a sprinkling of jazz. \n“My music is very emotionally driven\, as well as musically driven\, because I have been a singer for 50 years\,” says the singer\, composer and actor. She has performed on Broadway and in other major North American cities in the original hit production of Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris\, culminating with a memorable performance with Brel himself at New York City’s famed Carnegie Hall. \n“I have quite a background of music\, so it is about connecting and reaching the hearts of the audience. It’s very important to me to do that. There are a lot of singers these days who are imitations of imitations. They are not really connected as much to the musical lyrics as they should be\, and I feel audiences today really hunger for that\,” says the Winnipeg native who now lives in Oakville\, Ont. \n“Cabaret is an eclectic combination of music that is either political\, emotional or humorous\, and it is coming back because people are tired of the sterility that’s out there. Usually songs that have a personal bent have more emotional nutrition and people need that right now.” \nLander\, who is respected as a composer\, most notably for compositions for ballet\, including Diary\, which has been performed by the National Ballet of Canada\, the Hubbard Street Company of Chicago and the American Ballet Theater\, recently released an acclaimed recording of songs she has sung on stages across the world entitled “In My Life.” \nThe 65-year-old has made a remarkable comeback\, having retired from cabaret performance in her 50s. “What is amazing to me is that I’m in my 60s and I still sing really well\, and that\, to me\, is an amazing gift\,” Lander says. “If you are trained properly\, there’s no reason why you can’t maintain a lot of your voice\, but you will lose a certain amount of your range\, or it will shift. For me\, I go a little lower with my range\, but there were songs that I couldn’t have done before\, like September Song – but I was too young to do it – or Carousel by Brel that goes faster and faster and is quite mad at the end\, and when I was young\, it was extremely difficult to maintain the song. Now that I’m older\, I can handle it much better because of experience\, the [richer] interpretations and the power that I have at this age.”

SUMMARY:TOMSON HIGHWAY AND PATRICIA CANO: SONGS IN THE KEY OF CREE Live at Jazz Bistro
DESCRIPTION:“In The (Post) Mistress\, you see Highway’s idea of beauty – a Peruvian-Canadian from Northern Ontario singing to a Brazilian beat in an indigenous language. It is a beautiful vision.” — J. Kelly Nestruck (Globe and Mail Review\, Oct. 21st\, 2016) \n“English is so hierarchical. In Cree\, we don’t have animate-inanimate comparisons between things. Animals have souls that are equal to ours. Rocks have souls\, trees have souls. Trees are ‘who\,’ not ‘what.” – Tomson Highway \nSongs in the Key of Cree is a compilation of songs written over the past thirty years by Cree-Canadian playwright/ songwriter/pianist Tomson Highway. The songs in the show are taken from five of his musicals – Rose\, The Incredible Adventures of Mary Jane Mosquito\, The (Post) Mistress\, The Sage\, the Dancer\, and the Fool and his latest new musical as yet to be titled. \nWhat makes the songs unique is their Cree lyrics – and playfulness! Cree is the most spoken Native language in Canada today\, and many of Canada’s most well-known place names are of Cree origin including Winnipeg\, Manitoba\, Saskatoon\, Saskatchewan\, Chicoutimi\, Quebec and Ottawa. Cree is a very rhythmic language that lends itself very naturally to music and music-making\, and the style of the music is “cabaret.” Think Cole Porter and Kurt Weill…with Cree\, English\, French and even Spanish lyrics! (Mr. Highway is tri-lingual in Cree\, his mother tongue\, and French and English.) \nThe songs will be sung by extraordinary Peruvian-Canadian cabaret singer\, Patricia Cano\, accompanied by jazz saxophonist Marcus Ali\, and by Tomson Highway himself on the piano. \nWriter\, Composer and Musician Tomson Highway was born in a snow bank on the Manitoba/Nunavut border to a family of nomadic caribou hunters. He had the great privilege of growing up in two languages: Cree\, his mother tongue\, and Dene\, the language of the neighbouring nation\, a people with whom they travelled and hunted. His parents\, with no access to books\, television or radio\, would tell their children stories\, and Tomson fell in love with the oral tradition of storytelling. When he was six\, he was taken from his family and placed in residential school. Although he resented being taken away from his parents\, he did learn music\, and had plans to become a concert pianist. \nTomson enjoys an international career as playwright\, novelist\, pianist\, and songwriter. His critically acclaimed works include the plays The Rez Sisters\, Dry Lips Oughta Move to Kapuskasing\, Rose\, Ernestine Shuswap Gets her Trout and the best-selling novel Kiss of the Fur Queen. For many years\, Tomson ran Canada’s premiere Native theatre company Native Earth Performing Arts (based in Toronto)\, out of which emerged an entire generation of professional Indigenous playwrights\, actors and many Native theatre companies in Canada. \nTomson Highway’s many awards include the Dora Mavor Moore Award for Best New Play and Best Production (three wins\, five nominations)\, the Governor General’s Literary Award for Drama (two nominations)\, the Floyd S. Chalmers Canadian Play Award (two wins)\, winning the Toronto Arts Award (for outstanding contributions made over the years to the City of Toronto cultural industries)\, the Wang Harbourfront International Festival of Authors Award\, the Silver Ticket Award (from the Dora Mavor Moore Awards\, for outstanding contributions made over the years to the Toronto theatre industry)\, the National Aboriginal Achievement Award (2001)\, and the Order of Canada (1994).

SUMMARY:KALABASH Live at Jazz Bistro
DESCRIPTION:While there have been individual soloists who use the steel drum as a lead instrument in different jazz contexts\, Kalabash is distinctive as a jazz sextet that is built around the sound of this unique instrument\, and that is focused on performing original material. The combination of reeds and flute with the steel drums gives the group a special sound that has made the band a hit with festival audiences. Formed in Toronto in 1993\, the group has established a great performance record in that city and beyond. \nLive performance highlights include: the Molson Stage\, Harbourfront’s contribution to the du Maurier Downtown Jazz Festival\, Toronto (1994); the Super Dome\, Essence Magazine’s 25th Anniversary Music Festival\, New Orleans (1995); the Beaches Jazz Festival\, Toronto (1995 and 1996); a concert with Marjorie Whylie\, famed Jamaican folklorist and jazz pianist at The University of Toronto’s Faculty of Music (2000); CD launch concerts at the Pelican Inn and Naparima Bowl in Trinidad and Tobago (2001); and a CD launch performance at the Berlin Club\, Toronto (2001); the opening performance for the Barbados Jazz Festival (2002) at Sunbury House; an appearance at the Island Club\, Ontario Place in the JazzFM 91 Summer of Jazz series (2002); and more recently\, appearances at the Distillery Jazz Festival\, Toronto (2003) and the CIBC stage at Harbourfront\, Toronto (2003) in the Island Soul programme. \nKalabash has been featured in a one hour TV show on BRAVO! TV’s “Jazzman” series (1995) that was syndicated and aired extensively on Black Entertainment Television’s “BET on Jazz.” The band has also been featured in two BRAVO! TV videos of original music\, taped in 1998\, and a video of its performance in Trinidad and Tobago at “Jazz Artists On The Greens 2010″ where Kalabash headlined.

SUMMARY:COLIN HUNTER AND THE JOE SEALY QUARTET Live at Jazz Bistro
DESCRIPTION:While some people spend their whole lives dreaming of becoming a star\, others make it happen in addition to enjoying meaningful careers. This is Colin Hunter‘s story: a singer who soared to extraordinary heights in his business career and now shines brightly in the entertainment industry. \nColin Hunter is the Chairman and founder of Sunwing Travel Group. In 2005\, to commemorate the launch of Sunwing Airlines\, he recorded his first Big Band CD “Come Fly with me”. Colin performs regularly in Ontario and Quebec and at Jazz Festivals in Montreal\, Quebec City\, Mexico\, Dominican Republic\, and Dubai. In addition his schedule includes regular gigs at his own Jazz Bistro\, in Toronto. \nAn Officer of the Order of Canada\, JUNO-award winning artist Joe Sealy has enjoyed a highly successful career as a musician\, composer\, recording artist and radio broadcaster. His 1997 Juno Award winning Africville Suite inspired Ron Foley MacDonald of The Halifax Daily News to write; “This may be the most important jazz album released in Canada this year”. Joe has presented “The Africville Suite” in concert venues and at music festivals across Canada as well as Denmark\, Norway and the USA. As a pianist\, he has toured with “Blood Sweat and Tears” and performed with such artists as Joe Williams\, Milt Jackson\, Veronica Tennant\, and Timothy Findlay. \nPaul Novotny knows how to make the bass talk. Singers like Jackie Richardson\, Holly Cole\, Carol Welsman and Molly Johnson would all agree. They have called upon Paul for his melodic and rhythmic style. Paul’s production of Joe Sealy’s Juno Award-winning (1997) “Africville Suite” helped to establish him as one Canada’s best record producers. Paul is also an established Film/ TV composer and has written and produced music for many national radio and TV commercials. As a jazz bass player Paul has performed with Cedar Walton\, Geoff Keezer\, Junior Mance\, Don Thompson\, Tommy Banks\, and others. Paul is also a professor at Humber College\, School of Creative and Performing Arts in Toronto. \nDrummer\, composer\, producer and singer Daniel Barnes was born into an artistic family in the central hub of downtown Toronto\, Canada in 1965. His recordings are available through major retail outlets\, at itunes.com and through www.danielbarnes.net. Daniel was nominated “Drummer of the Year” at both the 2003 and 2007 National Jazz Awards while his work with others has thrice been nominated for Juno awards with a win in 1996 for Joe Sealy’s “Africville Suite”. \nA relatively new force to reckon with in the Toronto music scene\, Alison Young is from Ottawa where she honed her craft playing in local blues and R&B bands. After studying at the University of Toronto with Canadian sax greats Mike Murley and Kirk MacDonald\, Alison has emerged as one of the Toronto music scene’s hottest and most sought after reed players. Alison plays all kinds of music and has toured Canada with pop group Kelly and the Kellygirls and with the one and only Big Rude Jake. \nhttps://youtu.be/iZ90feriNaM

In 1984\, Mays moved to New York and since then he has worked with Murphy\, Gerry Mulligan\, Ron Carter\, James Moody\, Sonny Stitt\, Art Pepper\, and the Mel Lewis Orchestra\, among others. In the late 80’s Mays recorded for DMP (duet records with Ray Drummond) and in 1992 released several discs on Concord. These dates found Mays in a variety of settings\, beginning with the unaccompanied Live at Maybeck Recital Hall\, Vol. 26 (Bill Mays at Maybeck)\, followed by a trio date An Ellington Affair\, a duet with guitarist Ed Bickett Concord Duo\, Vol. 7: Bill Mays and Ed Bickert and finallly backed by a full band on Mays in Manhattan. In 2001 the pianist recorded his 11th album as a leader and his first for the Palmetto label\, Summer Sketches\, followed two years later by Going Home. \nLorne Lofsky is an internationally recognized jazz guitarist.
