SUMMARY:Cassatt - McNicoll @ The AGO
DESCRIPTION:This groundbreaking exhibition brings together for the first time the work of two extraordinary women Impressionist painters\, Mary Cassatt (American\, 1844-1926) and Helen McNicoll (Canadian\, 1879-1915).  Renowned for their depictions of modern womanhood\, their work had a profound impact on the development and proliferation of Impressionism in North America. \nThis original and eye-opening exhibition draws upon the AGO’s significant collection of McNicoll works and it is the first in Canadian history to centre Cassatt’s paintings and works on paper. Educated in Philadelphia and Montreal\, Cassatt and McNicoll both left North America for Europe in their early 20s to study and pursue art professionally. Cassatt was an original member of the Impressionist movement in Paris\, and a generation later\, McNicoll contributed to the movement’s evolution and spread around the globe. \nCurated by Caroline Shields\, Curator of European Art at the AGO\, and showcasing more than 65 artworks including paintings\, prints and sketch books\, this innovative exhibition will be accompanied by a fully illustrated publication.

SUMMARY:Jairus Sharif @ The Music Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Jairus Sharif and Mustafa Rafiq\, along with local artists Marilyn Yogarajah\, Subsume\, and Adrian Russouw\, join us for a personal\, wild-hearted tribute to the potential of improvised music. \nFor the final Emergents show of the year\, we delve into the expressive energy of freely improvised sound. \nMohkinstsis/Calgary-based multi-instrumentalist\, improviser\, composer and producer Jairus Sharif creates music that deals with healing\, self-understanding\, and personal freedom\, forging connections between hip-hop abstraction\, mysticism\, and outsider jazz. Following the fall 2022 release of his latest album Water & Tools\, Sharif will join the Music Gallery for an improvised set alongside Edmonton-based fellow sonic explorer Mustafa Rafiq\, navigating themes generated by the duo. \nOpening the evening are local improvisers Marilyn Yogarajah\, Subsume\, and Adrian Russouw\, performing together as a trio for the very first time in a freely-improvised set for trumpet\, bass\, and live electronics. \nPart of the Emergents series\, curated by Sara Constant.
