Jelly & George featuring Aaron Diehl and Cecile McLorin Salvant
Date: February 23rd, 2017
Venue: Koerner Hall
On February 23rd, celebrate some of the most influential jazz musicians of all time at Koerner Hall. See Aaron Diehl and Cécile McLorin Salvant present Jelly & George – a celebration of music by Jelly Roll Morton and George Gershwin!
Making her Canadian debut at Koerner Hall in 2013 with Ramsey Lewis, the extraordinary vocalist, Cécile McLorin Salvant returns! She has won the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Vocals Competition and is a Grammy Award-Winner.
Ben Ratliff writes in The New York Times ‘she sings clearly, with her full pitch range, from a pronounced low end to full and distinct high notes, used sparingly […] Her voice clamps into each song, performing careful variations on pitch, stretching words but generally not scatting; her face conveys meaning, representing sorrow or serenity like a silent-movie actor’.
A collaboration that spans a century of music and sheds new light on the work of two giants of American songwriting. Jelly & George features the fresh perspective of American jazz pianist/composer Aaron Diehl. Described by The New York Times as “melodic precision, harmonic erudition, and elegant restraint”, he is one of the most sought after jazz virtuosos and a leading force in today’s generation of jazz contemporaries, spearheading a distinct union of traditional and fresh artistry.
