While the trend in recent years has been to include many non-jazz acts in jazz festivals across the world, the TD Toronto Jazz Festival came out swinging with an almost all jazz lineup for its 2015 edition.
Kicking things off at the Jane Mallett Theatre will be a tribute to Oscar Peterson, celebrating his 90th birthday. Sitting in Oscar’s chair will be Robi Botos who is joined by former Oscar Peterson Quartet members guitar player Ulf Wakenius and drummer Alvin Queen. On bass will be the great Christian McBride. This show will feature historic photos of Oscar and will be narrated by his daughter Celine.
Other shows taking place at the Jane Mallett are the Robert Glasper Trio, An Evening With Branford Marsalis, Dave Holland (with Chris Potter, Lionel Loueke and Eric Harland) and Charles Lloyd.
Moving over to the Mainstage at Nathan Phillips Square, the inimitable Tower of Power will be playing on June 20th, The Count Basie Orchestra on the 21st, Al Jarreau (22nd), the Christian McBride Big Band (23rd), Booker T (24th), Al Di Meola (25th), Snarky Puppy (26th) and Gary Clark Jr. on the 27th. Nathan Phillips Square will also feature an Afterwork Series at 6:30 and a lunchtime series daily at 12:30.
Elsewhere in the city, the Horseshoe will host the Mike Stern Trio, Garland Jeffreys and the Canadian debut of Sonny Knight & The Lakers.
All of these shows joine the previously announced Koerner Hall series which features Kurt Elling, A Live taping of Radio Deluxe with the John Pizzarelli Quartet feat. Jessica Molaskey & Alex Pangman, and Jamie Cullum.
