Oscar Peterson personified excellence in everything he approached. He was a gifted and multiple award-winning pianist, composer, educator and one of Canada’s most beloved national treasures. His legacy lives on to this day, not only in the music that he created but in the way he continues to inspire those who have followed him.
Dr. Oscar Emmanuel Peterson, CC CQ OOnt was born Aug. 15, 1925. Because this day was blessed with one of history’s greatest jazz musicians, back on August 15th, 2022, JAZZ.FM91 officially declared August 15th as Oscar Peterson Day. The City of Toronto and its Mayor followed suit with an official proclamation.
Today, JAZZ.FM91 is honouring him with special programming and a Live to Air performance from 7 to 8:00 p.m. ET featuring JUNO Award-winning musicians Robi Botos on piano, Jim Doxas on drums, and acclaimed bassist Pat Collins. The trio will also speak to the legacy of Oscar Peterson and his influence not just on them but on jazz overall. Oscar’s daughter, Céline Peterson, will take part in the storytelling and share some important news regarding centennial celebrations. John Devenish, the host of Dinner Jazz, will guide the hour.
“The overall feeling surrounding this milestone occasion has been excitement,” says Céline, “Whether my own, the musicians we are working with, or that of those involved in varying capacities, it is clear that this means a great deal to a lot of people. To finally be able to begin to talk about some of the things we have been working on ahead of 2025 feels like a reward, as does the privilege of sharing this with so many wonderful people.”
JAZZ.FM91 General Manager Dana Wigle adds: “Oscar Peterson spent his life sharing beauty, hope, passion and compassion. Oscar continues to inspire greatness and unity. He is a jazz legend and embodied values that all Canadian’s aspire to. We are humbled and grateful to help share his enduring legacy and we’d like to thank Céline, Robi, Jim, Pat and our friends at Yamaha Music Canada for making this celebration possible.”
In addition to tonight’s concert, there’ll be hourly Oscar features throughout the day with tributes from musicians such as Terri Lyne Carrington, Christian McBride, Marcus Roberts and more.
