David Cruz is an up and coming jazz guitarist based in Toronto. David began piano lessons at the age of six and eventually picked up the guitar at age ten. David attended a performing arts high school in Mississauga. In his last year of high school he joined the Humber college community music program. In his time there he played in an ensemble led by Johnny Griffith and studied privately with Emile D’Eon. David went on to study music at York University. Here he studied privately with Lorne Lofsky. He also had the opportunity to study under; Kelly Jefferson, Roy Patterson, Sundar Viswanathan, and Anthony Michelli.
David gigs in Toronto regularly. His main project is called FOMA, (@fomaband on Instagram) a group that focus’ on playing modern jazz music with an awareness of hip-hop and funk. David has a great deal of big band experience, having played in the York University Jazz Orchestra and the Toronto all Star Big Band. David works as a sideman for countless projects and plays small jazz gigs at restaurants and private functions across the city. You can always count on David to bring fresh takes to standard tunes as well as depth and maturity to original tunes.
