Dan Block – Almost Modern

Almost Modern: the Swing to Bop Project is reed player Dan Block’s newest album, and it is well worth having if snapshots of history are your thing.

Block and guitarist Chris Flory spent half a decade tracking down thirteen of the tunes from the 1940s they feel are, to use their words “the connection point and transition from Swing to Bop.” These are early, early gems by composers on their way to legend status: Charlie Parker, Don Byas, Bud Powell, Dexter Gordon, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk. Who can resist such a retrospective collection, especially since it comes with Block’s illuminating liner notes?
