The heartwarming Newfoundland 9/11 tale told in “Come From Away” has been honored once again. On Sunday June 4th, the production was awarded Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Musical, Outstanding Book of a Musical, and Outstanding Feature Actress.
Canadian musical theatre power couple Irene Sankoff and David Hein created the feel good tale 5 years ago, and have been riding on a wave of accolades since it was first staged in 2015. The story is based on the actual events that took place when residents of Gander N.L. selflessly welcomed hundreds of stranded air travelers to their small community in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks.
After a sold out run in Toronto in 2016, the show moved to Broadway earlier this year where it was critically acclaimed. It currently has 7 nominations going into the 2017 Tony Awards on June 11th and 8 nods at this year’s Dora Awards on June 26th.
The Drama Desk Awards celebrate the New York theatre scene holistically including Broadway, off-Broadway and off-off-Broadway productions.
Come From Away returns to Toronto in February of 2018.
