My name is Caleb Khuu and I am currently in Grade 10 at Sir John A. Macdonald Secondary School. I was born in British Columbia but now currently reside in Waterloo, Ontario. I have always been interested in music starting from a very young age, experimenting with many instruments until I found my calling with the guitar. I started learning guitar at age 12 and have been very driven in learning many styles, especially jazz. In addition to guitar, I also play double bass in my school’s senior concert band and Jazz Combo which I direct. I recently played in the Uptown Waterloo Jazz Festival and I participate in nine of my school’s music ensembles.
I would like to develop my ensemble playing skills and harmonic vocabulary. Some of my biggest influences have been Andy Brown, Pat Martino, Jaco Pastorius, Barney Kessel, and Julian Lage.
Outside of music I enjoy swimming and reading.
I hope to pursue a career in the medical field in postsecondary but definitely want to keep music a big part of my life.
I am very excited to play with other like-minded musicians and look forward to challenging myself with difficult charts and performing with the Jazz Fm Youth Big Band this year
