This Sunday from 8-9am, it’s Arts Toronto with your host Mark Wigmore on JAZZ.FM91.

This episode:

The Illusionists: Live from Broadway is set to be one of the biggest draws for live stage this holiday season and for good reason. The flashy production features seven masters of magic including Escapologist Andrew Basso, The Inventor Kevin James, deduction genius Colin Cloud, and Canadian Darcy Oake; the wildly tattooed and affable illusionist who acts as the lone Canuck on the Mirvish stage housing the show. The Winnipeg native has paid his dues, playing big rooms and small, but his big break came when he appeared on Network television’s Britain’s Got Talent. His incredible illusions went viral on Youtube following the original airing. Darcy’s talents can be witnessed at the Princess of Wales Theatre through January 8th. Senior Arts Editor Mark Wigmore met Darcy Oake backstage at the POW to discuss his magical path, the glitzy show he’s a part of, and the culture of The Illusionist.

And, he’s played with everyone from Branford Marsalis and John Scofield to Bela Fleck & The Flecktones and The Dave Matthews Band. Saxophonist, bandleader, composer, educator and three-time Grammy-award winner Jeff Coffin was in Toronto this summer, and while he has here, he dropped by the JAZZ.FM91 studios. He spoke with Community Arts Reporter Shirley Camia about his passion for his craft, and, in light of all the things he’s done, how he wants to be remembered.

And 2017 is turning out to be another dazzling year for Oscar Peterson fans. A fresh set of tribute concerts and galas have been announced that feature some of the most accomplished musicians on the planet. The announcements are in correlation to the 3-CD recording “Oscar, with Love”, the Kelly Peterson-produced project that contains music from some of the world’s greats, performing compositions from Oscar’s songbook; from Kenny Barron and Chic Corea to Robi Botos and Hiromi. 2017 will see events in Niagara on the Lake, Chicago, Brazil and a gala presentation in Ottawa for the Canadian Sesquicentennial. Oscar’s loving widow Kelly Peterson joined Mark Wigmore in the JAZZ.FM91 studios for a special sneak preview.

All that and beautiful jazz for a Sunday morning. Catch the show from 8-9am on Sunday.
