ARTS TORONTO - April 15th Edition

This Sunday from 8-9 a.m., it’s another edition of Arts Toronto with your host Mark Wigmore on Jazz FM91.

This episode:

The We Are One Jazz Project concert will take place at the George Weston Recital Hall on Wednesday, April 18th. This very special event will feature a 200-member children’s choir comprised of students from 6 elementary schools in Toronto's Scarborough district. The students have just completed 4 months of intensive training in jazz music, so they are primed and ready. The choir will be accompanied by a professional jazz orchestra, an adult choir and special guest, Dr. Barry Harris, the long time jazz recording artist, ambassador and educator. The mandate of the project is to strengthen the community, through jazz; harnessing music and arts to inspire youngsters from all walks of life. The President and Founder of The We Are One Jazz Project is Howard Rees, and he joins Mark in-studio.

And with International Jazz Day fast approaching; a unique way to celebrate! The Holla Jazz troupe is back, this time offering the jazz inspired show, Floor’d. The show will be held at The Winchester Street Theatre in Cabbagetown beginning on April 25th and running through the 28th. The performance features dance, but also live music, and draws inspiration from Katrina Hazard-Gordon’s renowned book, Jookin: The Rise of Social Dance Formations in African-American Culture. Jook houses were the home to dance moves like the Charleston, the Shimmy, The Funky Butt, The Fish Tail and The Twist. On stage joining the seven dancers from Holla Jazz will be seven musicians, led by acclaimed musical director Gerald Heslop. He is the founder of Ajar Music and Entertainment and is presently the Music Coordinator at the Philadelphia SDA church as well the Musical Director of the ‘Continuous Praise Orchestra’. Gerald joins Mark in-studio to explain Floor'd.
